I'd take off the sump and have a look at the oil pick up pipe. My oil light came on in my GTI and the Oil Pump had seized causing the little chain to snap. However when this happened I switched the car off straight away.

2 Weeks later, New oil Pump. New chain kit and the car is alive again. Currently driving it and is spot on.

As above, drop sump and check the pickup - if not blocked then suspect oil pump
