Parking Sensors OPS tutorial needed
« on: October 31, 2015, 06:53:00 am »
Hi all,

I bought this set of parking sensors for the rear of my mk5 GTI - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/191211754714

I have installed the sensors but don't really know where to go with regards to wiring it up. Anyone have any good guides on this? I believe this set are from a mk6 golf and would connect to my RNS 510 in some way (via can gateway?) to enable Optical Parking i.e. radar on screen. Am I right in thinking this?

Any and all help appreciated!

There should be 4 wires to connect to car

Positive,  negative

Then can high can low

Positive goes to ignition switched terminal

Negative car body

Can high low needs to goto the power train can wires,  ie on gateway or steering wheel control module or xenon hight control module,  dsg lever,  haldex unit in awd cars

Can low always has brown stripe

Can high orange and black

Plus also you'll need vcds to add it to gateway and code module etc

@SI-R32 Fantastic and cheers for the detailed write-up! I was hoping you'd see this!

I'll see if I can follow that guide when I get to the car this morning at the body shop - just had the sensors and rear bumper sprayed on Thursday. Will post any questions here later with photos to help. Will probably use the the CAN gateway as no height control module or DSG.

I've got VCDS ready to add the feature to the gateway and then code anything.

@Lyons - That's great - I'll give him a shout later if I get completely stuck. :)

So after visiting the bodyshop here are the questions I have:

The cable from the sensors is coming out below my right rear light and I'll need to feed it toward the passenger door box beside the dashboard (same place as the interior fuse box, except on the passenger side), unless anyone can suggest a better position?

I can fit the ground.
The positive cable can go into my ignition switch terminal easily.

The high can and low can cables are the bits I think I'm going to have trouble with. I want to remove the pins from the gateway and put them into the sensors' loom and put the loom's cables back into the gateway. Much like this picture from a forum:

Is this the best approach? My uncle is a mechanic and suggests just splicing into the gateway's cables as there is very limited access via the cubby hole above the accelerator to start removing terminal pins.

Another relative who is a retired VW mechanic says splicing is a bad idea and could lead to the CAN throwing errors. He says the best approach is the above picture, but would need a terminal release tool to get the current cables out of the gateway, which I don't have.

Any opinions on how to get better access to the gateway or do I have to remove the dash to do this?
Is the steering wheel control module better to work with than the Can gateway to get to the power train can wires?

Sorry for the long ass post, but would just love to get this done soon as now my numberplate lights are out until I get this wired up

Look at this link http://www.r32oc.com/tutorials-guides/30166-canbus-gateway-location-removal.html

This is the best way to solder the can wires (even using this route it's still tight for anything other than a gas iron).

I fitted my control module in the passenger side C panel which allowed easy testing and OEM style fittment.
The pin removal tool off Laser is less than £10 https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=A_mtFGKUz_4
But practice on a scrapyard motor as its tight and wouldn't be an easy repair if your a bit heavy handed

Personally I don't see any difference at all in the picture above to either soldering or cutting and crimping all the can wires together,  I've never had and can errors thrown up and I've added quite a few different things to the can system
Loads of extra's and retro fits.

Well folks - I think I've fecked it up and I need some help.

I got the system wires routed to the front and got access to the CAN Gateway wires and to pull the pins out and replace with parking sensor's CAN low / CAN high (Pin 6 / 16) .

Unfortunately the CAN high pin got a bit stuck on the way out of the gateway and once out, we saw the terminal was slightly bent and the terminal itself was loose (the cable was just sliding in and out of the terminal).

So we decided to solder the CAN high cable to the parking sensor's cable.
CAN low went into the new parking sensors' loom without a hitch.

Got ground connected and postive power with an inline fuse connected to the fuse box.

Started it up and saw the following:

Cruise control light on dash flickering and then eventually turning off (with no function from CC).
Indicators being eratic/sticking.
Door locking/unlocking repeatedly while driving.
Window controls inoperable for other doors from driver's side.
MFSW slow to respond.
Clicking noise happening every 3 or 5 seconds (sounds simialr to click from indicator relay - and in the same region).

Not sure what to do here - we spent a good couple of hours checking everything over to make sure it was all connected in the correct sequence.

Does anyone have any ideas on what's gone wrong? Slightly worried I may have done some damage somewhere :(

Will post a VCDS log of all of the issues that are now present.

Also, here is a scan of the car:

[removed scan as it contained my registration - contact me if you'd like the scan]

Quite a few controllers could not be contacted - notably the Doors.

Help - crumby Saturday night worried about this  :stupid:

Did you cancel all the DTC's after your scan and recheck they cleared when rescanned?

What pin connectors did you remove from the can gateway connector cause from memory mine were On the CAN gate connector (T-20e) Pin 16 is CAN High and Pin 6 is CAN Low.
Now I know you say you removed the same pins so can you confirm the wire colour code including the trace wire colours you've remove.

Cleared many of the faults after this scan. Will get a new scan in the morning.

I don't believe I've gotten the pins wrong (but hopeful I have, as easy fix, right?).

These are my "before" pictures.

CAN high is pin 16 - it is had a black trace wire in it and also has a slight white ribbon at its bottom - you can see my photo of it all connectted that it is now soldered into the CAN high of the parking sensors:

CAN low is pin 6.

I will get a few shots of the Gateway connector in the morning to make sure they are in their rightful position - cheers for your help! :)

As a check if you follow the can gateway wires into the vehicle harness the correct two wires will be as a twisted pair.

the best thing you can do today is make sure the orange and black (high) from the car 100 % goes to pin 16 of the gateway and the orange and brown (low) goto pin 6 unplug the ops module cancel all fault codes and see if the cars ok

next have you changed your gateway in your mk5 golf or is it still the same version?

Will do to confirm.

Will check CAN high goes fully to pin 16 today and CAN low to pin 6.

Will also try plugging the car's CAN low directly back into the Gateway again. Can't do the same with the CAN high due to soldering.

Will disconnect the OPS.

Yes, I upgraded the Gateway to 7N0 907 530 AN to support my RNS 510. Is this one okay?
