Nope. It's definitely not plug and play. You have to swap the lower frames over, cut a couple of inches from your original gear knob.

Still waiting on brakes. Have track day next Friday and I'm stacked out with work right up until then. Slightly pissed off. Doubt they will be on before my track day now.

Without better brakes you won't enjoy the track day as I you want to. They'll fade eventually and you'll have to drive slower until they cool down enough.

Fitting bolt on brakes isn't that hard but you'd still need to bed in the pads before going to the track, I think.

Find time to do your brakes or you may as well not bother going on your trackday from my experiences.

Brakes are the no1 factor on the track day that fail / cause lack of enjoyment.
takes a couple of hours to fit i'm sure you can find the time...

It is plug and play . 

i was one of the first to fit a mk7 gearknob back in 2014 
drill into the gearknob from the bottom up . can't remember the size bit you need.. whatever the size of the shifter shaft was (easy to find with ring spanner)
simply remove stock one. unstaple mk7 leather from mk7 base
restaple mk7 leather onto mk5/6 base or use araldite just make sure you have got the leather pulled nicely.
drill up through gearknob enough to get the shifter in the correct position
tighten up clip and secure the base 
saves ruining your oem components which are more fiddly to change

I know. Made it clear since I dropped them off at the start or January that I needed them back before this track day. I've done a few in my time.

You dont need to cut your old shaft. I suggested already. Drill into the bottom of new gearknob :-)

You dont need to cut your old shaft. I suggested already. Drill into the bottom of new gearknob :-)

Ahh. Yes, guess you could do that. But you don't end up with a squared edge so there is a possibility of the knob rotating. There is a flat edge inside to stop that happening, so cutting down the shaft and grinding one side flat is preferable.

Never had an issue with the knob rotating as long as the clip is done up properly.

 in order to help my friend fit his one, i took mine off , and wasn't able to tighten the clip up properly using the pliars i had, so does rotate with a bit of pressure now. but was fine before i touched it again . once tightend up it will be fine

just another way of doing it if you want to be able to return the car to standard easily.
