Approx cost for Timing Belt change
« on: November 04, 2015, 06:19:08 pm »
Early next year will have to change the cam/timing belt.  Never done this on a car before....

How much am I looking at total cost including part and labour?  Some people have told me £800, others have said alot less than that.  I most certainly won't be taking it to a VW garage, probably just a bog standard garage.

I know it'll vary on location, but any suggestions are welcome.

For info VW normally have an offer on where price can be competitive. It all comes down to who you trust working on your car.

For the dealers, there may still be a special offer on the Cambelt and Water pump at £350 fitted.
I had mine done a few weeks ago at a local VW Specialist - £320 using vw parts.

Mine was £350 Inc water pump at VW.  Local independent quoted a little less, but not by much.

How hard is it to do yourself?

Not trying to cut cost of anything as 350 to ensure the life of your engine is a small price to pay.

but out of curiosity. I think we all have the tools to do the job, it may be a case of getting the timing wrong and F-ing it up lol

you need a proper timing thingy to hold it in place.
I'm pretty mechanically minded (i can change gearboxes etc) but i wouldn't do a cambelt myself.

No timing tools for doing the belt on the TFSi.

I find the job straight forward  :P
