Lol!, Take your pick I've had (intermittent) rattles from the rear on and off since 2009!

Could be rear seats, in particular the ski hatch where the armrest is...

The plastic trim on the inside of the tailgate...

Maybe the rubber balls on the underside of the parcel shelf!

Hi

Check the dust shields located behind the rear discs. Onle of mine had sheered the bolt fixings and would bounce around over bumps ect. I had the car up twice trying to locate the route cause and it nearly sent me bonkers.

In the end I just removed the shield without replacement. Happy hunting

Have you eliminated the rear lights? See if its louder with the back seat down. The plastic lenses inside come loose and rub against each other, makes a hell of a racket!

I had to replace the inner light in mine as it was rattling inside, took me about a month to find it!

Check pads in the rear calipers, I've mintex pads and they clatter in the calipers over bumps.

I got a stone/rock in my rear left lower control arm. That clattered around and worried me until i realised and took it out.

Also had the rear arm-rest creaking.

Also worth checking that there isn't something loose rattling about your spare wheel well, like a coin or 6mm socket    drove me mad for weeks!

Loose reflector lens in mine took me weeks to find as when I put he tailgate up to find the rattle the lens did not rattle when it was horizontal  but once the tailgate was down and the lens was vertical again it rattled drove me bonkers !! 2 blobs of super glue later sanity resumed........

Took me ages, ended up getting a mate in the back seat leaning through with his head in the boot.
Took them apart and siliconed all the inner lenses together. Thoses buggers are never rattling again.
Until youve heard the noise youd never believe the lights could make it.

I was right! Do I win a prize? ITs a pig to replace so I just went down the route of removing the wheel and hacksawing the dust shield off.

The loud and constant rattle at the back of my car was this - the reflector in the rear light. It was a 15 min DIY job - and most of that time was waiting for the glue to dry!

It sounds like different cars have different sources of rattle and solving one problem merely reveals another. I've had rattles from behind the boot trim of my 06 GTI for a long while, but one in particular is loud and triggered by the slightest movement, so is almost constant. It transpires it's one of two microswitches connected to the wiper motor. They are fixed to the bodywork, but not securely, so removing their freedom stops the rattle. Sadly it's only proved a temporary solution, as the noisier one keeps breaking free thanks to the potholes and cobbled roads around here. I'll keep working on it.

I hope that helps someone.
