sh!t day
« on: December 21, 2008, 12:30:08 pm »
Well just had a pretty crap sh!te weekend.

Wasn't planning on going up to brum this weekend since xmas is so close but had to go see a mate who's very poorly. May not make it to xmas and probably isn't gonna make it to New Years either.

Anway, got up this morn after a sleepless night. Set off and went to turn right at a smallish roundabout. As I was about to exit the roundabout, there was another car coming towards the roundabout, indicating to turn left onto the road I'd just come off. Behind him was some muppet who overtook him, came onto my side of the road, forcing me to keep to the left, and squeezed past and headed straight on.

Because I had to swerve to miss him, I'd clipped the back wheel on the curb as I'd come off the roundabout. Didn't stop to look at the damage because I didn't want to be too depressed whilst driving so ignored it and drove on. After an accidental detour onto the M42N (instead of M42S) and a fairly swift journey, I arrived back.

Went to park the car in the garage and decided to have a look at the damage. I almost passed out. Twice.

:scared: :scared: :scared: :scared: :scared: :scared: :scared: :scared: :scared: :scared: :scared:

The tyre damage probably looks worse than it is. Only a small slither of rubber, barely a millimetre thick but still, I didn't expect to see that. It survived 165 mile journey at high speed (door to door in two hours exactly).

As I went to go around the car to get back in, a glint caught my eye.

What a sh*t weekend. Plus I had to post this twice coz I don't know where the first thread went.

we all take pride in our cars so its a real downer when this happens (I did one of my rear wheels too ).
However its only metal and can be fixed, as youve already experienced, people and life are far more important.
Think of it as an opportunity to modify (new wheels ? ) and enjoy the time of year with family and friends  :happy2:  :xmastree:
p.s. If you find a good refurb place let us all know.

Cheers.
It was more of a rant of a bad weekend - I didn't know how poorly my friend was until I went to see him. Then all this other stuff happens. Difficult to stay strong when everything else keeps going wrong.

Bad stuff seems to come in waves, but so does good stuff - So hang on in there!

Sorry to hear of your damage - Feckin' annoying those idiots who drive like that! All fixable though.

One word of advice (hoping you don't mind) - Always stop as soon as possible to check damage after any contact like that - A tyre cut could have been far more serious as you practiced a launch on a M'way ramp later!!

If you are up in Brum area often, I'd deffo highly recommend A1 Wheel Renovations in Wolverhampton - So would Greenouse highly recommend them. Contact Nigel on 01902 871 422 and say Robin and Nathan sent you (he'll probably cut you a good deal as well).

:happy2:

Mate, your (and anybody else') advice is always welcome. Normally, I would check but because I already had bad news, I just assumed the alloy had been badly curbed and didn't bother. Had it not been such a weekend, I'd have quickly gotten out to inspect any damage.

Given the minor damage to the tyre wall, is it worth getting the tyre replaced? If there's significant compromise, then I'll need to get it done asap as it's xmas and I need to be heading back to Brum in a few days.

As for the alloys, was thinking of getting them refurbed anyway but had planned to get them painted too (black with red lip ala illyun) but this has put me right off.

How much did the place charge (roughly)?

You need to check out the state of your tyre with an expert. Don't laugh, but your VW dealer should be able to advise for free under an Extra Safety Inspection ticket.

How much A1 charge will depend exactly on what you have done - Give Nigel a call - He's very friendly and genuine.

If the side wall has damage, then the strength of that wall is weaker and COULD blow out. As you have a family, safety is the 1st thing stealth, get it checked and get it replaced if advised. i for one would risk safety over risk.

Inspector Dribble is right! A damaged/weakened side wall could potentially cause a blow-out. Simply not worth any risk whatsoever my friend.

Yeah I've already been looking at places to buy and fit tyres.

For the michelin pilot exalto's,
blackcircles deliver for £146 and fit for £162
mytyres deliver for £154 and fit for £168

Any other sources/places I could try to buy from?

Kwikfit often will price match stealth, i did that and they knocked the price down from £146 to £86 + vat!!!! :jumping: They were for Dunlop Sportmax but i have no issues with that tyre. 5th in recent tests overall.

Only issue I have is that I want all four tyres to match. Three are fine (mich. pilot exaltos) so I think I'm supposed to make sure it's the same on each axle, which means either changing two tyres or one. If they had it, I would have gone to them too.

Kwikfit stock Michelins stealth, seriously i would get quotes from elsewhere and see if kwikfit will price match. i saved nearly £100 for 2 tyres fitted.

Went to two different tyre places.

Both said there was no significant damage, which was limited to the thickened bit of the tyre over the rim (rim protection). They call it a "kerb rider". Unfortunately, neither could assist with refurbing rims.
