TTRS calipers/disc options/clearance
« on: November 16, 2015, 12:58:56 pm »
I have a 2011 Scirocco TSI, I have the standard 312mm brakes and standard 18" wheels, plus 17" winter wheels.
I got some serious brake fade last week with Yellowstuff pads. I have picked up some TTRS/RS3 4 pots and I am looking at disc options, I want to be able to use both sets of wheels so I am limited to approx 350mm max disc diameter. I can make the caliper brackets and have already made a trial bracket to check clearance. I dont want to run wheel spacers, or if I do keep them as thin as possible, so I need the working part of the disc as far back as possible, but the ball joint is close - looks like about 10mm clearance from the back of the std 312mm disc - that is fairly worn.
So, can anyone tell me how close the Merc ML450 disc is to the balljoint ?
I have also found some Audi A6 discs, 347mm, 30mm thick, total hight 59.5mm - not sure if that will be too much - could well be touching the ball joint.
Audi A5 discs are another option 345mm 29.3 thick 51.8 total hight - only 2mm higher than TTS discs, but every millemeter counts !
I have a lathe/milling machine so making brackets/spacers etc is not a problem

You wont get the calipers under 17's.

Even if a 345/350mm disc was 1mm away from the ball joint you will still need spacers I would say.

We do a bracket that allows the 340/345mm discs to fit with the TTRS calipers.

The yellow pads are terrible which would have been the largest factor in poor performance.

Stock Scirocco wheels are awful for fitment.
You need a 12mm spacer to clear a TTRS setup with the 340/345mm discs [edit: on Scirocco turbines]. I have a set up from Alex on my Scirocco
If you want bigger brakes you will have to accept you need to get some spacers.

The 370mm stock TTRS discs are awful. So I would go for the 340s.

The only "upgrade" brakes you'll fit under 17 inch wheels are the stock R32/S3 front brake setup

The Yellowstuff pads were in fact good when they were first fitted, but I wont be buying any more !
My 17" wheels are Audi A5, offset is not quite right for the car, from memory they stick out 13mm c/w std, but they clear the TTRS calipers fine - just based on putting the wheel over the caliper mounted on dummy bracket with the 312mm disc still in place. The clearance problem is with the 18s. The car dives better with the 18s, the steering tugs a bit with the 17s, I put this down to the offsett, and fear I may be replicating that offset if I use spacers with 18s. That is why I am trying to get the disc friction face as far back as possible.
My 17s have winter tyres fitted, I like 17s in the winter as it gives a bit more sidewall depth, I have bent 18s on winter potholes before, around here the roads are littered with potholes by Feb/March !

Pete, you're thinking same as me.... TTRS 345s inside 18" wheels on an Ed30? I was told today they'd need to be 19" to fit these discs and calipers.
It would be great to not use spacers........ if possible?

Gordy the TTRS are 370mm i think and ed30 18 inch will need 12 mm to clear or be safe

You can make TTRS calipers fit on 340/ 345mm discs with adaptors from AKS Tuning, makes for a lighter setup and discs are much cheaper to replace. They fit behind 18" wheels but you will need spacers as they are very wide what size depends on the wheel you have i think ED30 pasceras need 12mm

Not strictly true. So do a kit that will fit under 17s. Think it's a 4 pot 330mm kit

That's true, there is an AP Racing setup also.
I should have said comparable cost as I remember the AP racing one being £1500+

Not 100% sure on spacers as I've never done it personally. Discs wise I went 340mm MTEC drilled and grooved about £140
