Stereo issue
« on: November 17, 2015, 09:18:47 pm »
Hi,

I got given this by my dad out of his 2011 Tiguan

Thought he was being generous but all it does is say swl initialising when I put it in my 2004 mk5 golf.

Is there a fix for this or is it screwed?

Cheers in advanced!

Isn't that going to drain your battery having an early Golf without an uprated canbus gateway?

It will.

You can get newer gateways for around £30 from ebay

Sorry being a bit of a noob, what's the gateway business? Seen it mentioned a few time on here but I'm none the wiser!

You will need an adaptor aswell as the unit draining your battery due to older canbus buddy, so I wouldn't bother unless you have one.

You can always take the plastic connectors off your current leads and just plug the leads in without the plastic house. I wrapped the first one in electrical tape to avoid interference... Worked at treat and saved me £7 (and more importantly the wait from eBay).

The biggest problem you're going to face is the CAN Gateway being an older version which doesn't support this stereo. Essentially, the communication between the stereo and your car will be wrong and the stereo will never fully turn off, leading to a dead car due to battery drain over night.

Odds are the version you've got is not compatible - get a VCDS scan of your car and look for your Gateway's version and compare with the ross-tech website.

http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/Navigation_System_(RNS510)_Retrofitting

This is a newer version that I bought (mine was 1K0-907-530-F, so needed updating):

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/OEM-CAN-BUS-GATEWAY-CONTROL-UNIT-for-VW-RNS310-RCD510-RNS510-RNS315-7N0907530AN-/191085346455?hash=item2c7d92fe97:g:n50AAOSwu-BWPW~E

Then you need to:

  • Get a backup (screenshots will do!) of your current Gateway's installed modules list (this just details everything in your car that is running through your Gateway)
  • Replace Gateway with newer version
  • Untick all installed items on the new one (as it probably came from a car which had different installed items) and tick all of the boxes that apply to your car

Job is a goodun.

You can buy pre-coded Gateways ( @Eddie-NL sells these ), where I presume he does all of the work of ticking the boxes for you.

You may need to code the RNS 510 in as well.

Any questions, let us know!

Good luck.

code via serial number only works if the unit is fitted from the factory

most units sold on ebay would have had a new code made up

If the code via serial number doesn't work I have RNS manager and can make a new code

Genuine VCDS VAG-COM HEX-USB + Genuine Vag Commander + Genuine VAG Tacho + Genuine VAG CAN PRO  + RNS Manager for Video in Motion and New Pin Code for RNS510

Cluster and Key coding

Location Great Yarmouth

Code sorted, my old man phoned vw with his vin number and the serial number off the stereo and the chap sorted a code. Funnily I phoned Salisbury branch and the said it couldn't be done, he phoned peterbourgh and they sorted it. Why such a wide difference in help I'll never know!

Need to get an ariel adapter, and also a gps sensor, seen them on eBay really cheap so that's no problem.

The sticking point for me is the Bluetooth module. I can get off eBay (from China) the whole module and plug and play harness for £68. Anyone had any experiences of China gear? All says oem on the listing but not convinced
