RNS 510
« on: November 17, 2015, 09:08:43 pm »
Hey guys!

I have a 2008 Golf ED30 and wanted to upgrade to an RNS 510. I've been looking on eBay but have discovered that there's so many different variations and some apparently are 'LED'. I'm guessing the LED is referred to the different type of screen on the unit itself?

Is there anyone on the forum who does these and one more thing, is it a plug and play as most people state on their ad?

Kind regards

Depending on what canbus you have it could be plug and play.  Best to get a vcds scan done of your car to make sure.

You will need an aerial adapter.

If its got a star button on top right corner then its an led.

A 2008 Golf shouldn't need a new CAN to be compatible with the RNS-510. But nothing better than checking before fitting the radio.

Personally I don't feel there's much difference in the later LED version units to the older versions.

I am running a version 'B' head-unit with version 'D' firmware and it works absolutely fine with everything that I need. The older versions are cheaper to purchase as well  :happy2:

And you should be able to fit yourself as they are pretty much plug and play, as the adverts state. Just hope you don't have to change the gateway as that can be a pain (as I figured out the hard way).

Good luck.

The screen is the bigest difference and performance.

Yep.  I had an 'A' RNS510 and it was slow as hell to boot up, very slow to load media from the HDD and the NAV was borderline unusable.  I put a 'Q' in recently and that is loads faster and better in all respects.

Mine's an 07 ED30 using original canbus.  The later 510s can have the battery drain issues solved internally with a software adjustment.  Earlier 510s need a newer Canbus to solve the battery drain.....and if you want to change the CANbus, you have to take the wipers off, the scuttle cover, remove the wiper mech and the access panel and then you can get at the CANbus box.   To do it from underneath inside the car is a total nightmare if you have man size hands.

My Ed. 30 came from factory with a RNS-510 A that I upgraded the firmware to 5238 modified version. With that firmware it wasn't that slow. Not as fast as my current P and R but bearable in daily use. I read that older firmwares were really slow, though.

I upgraded to a newer version because older RNS-510 can be a pain to copy new maps to the HDD.
