Sorry for the long title, but all these items stopped working all together.  The most worrying are the boot not opening from the handle and the reverse light.  I'm having to open it from the emergency release every time!  I've had a friend do a diagnostic and the listed items were there.  I've ruled out one of the usual suspects, in the wiring loom in the rubber tubing on the left between tailgate and vehicle.  This was because we were able to see measuring blocks for the rear fog light and reverse light.  We tested it by activating reverse and the measurement went up to 100%, so it indicates that theres power there.

If I put my ear to the latch mechanism and pull the badge handle I can hear clicking.  I don't know if the motor inside the actuator is seized as I know they are meant to be lubricated.  Also, does anyone know the correct part number for this unit.  Correct me if I'm wrong, but the reason my wiper, fog and reverse light aren't working is because of the failed boot latch.  At least I can hear something clicking inside of the latch, indicating that theres power there.

Thanks for any help you can shed on this.

Exactly the same problem as mine a few years ago. Broken earth wire in tailgate loom...

Thanks for your reply.  However, as much as I could actually see from both ends of the rubber tube, the wires looked intact.  The most pressing is that I have electrics going to the failed parts though, so my guess is a defective latch.

I don't think a faulty latch would stop the other parts working but I stand to be corrected...

I had the earth wire repaired and all was good again, a year or two later the boot lock broke (due to over use) but everything else was working fine.

As above -"Earth fault for my money" - often the wire looks intacked but internally the single conductor strands have broken.
When I've had a latch faulty it's caused battery drain but there's a first for everything so let's us know your final out come.

If you have a probe tester, use that on the wiring at different points to check for power.
Also continuity of the earth cable to help you diagnose the fault before splashing out on a boot lock.

If you have a probe tester, use that on the wiring at different points to check for power most commonly where the wires flex more.
Also continuity of the earth cable to help you diagnose the fault before splashing out on a boot lock.

That's whats puzzling me.  When we had it hooked up to the VAG COM, as soon as I engaged reverse gear, the measuring block went from 2% to 100% and it did the same for the fog light.  Now if the connection was broken here, surely this woudn't occur.

Above is the only way really for those types of faults as the current can't be supplied due to the nature of the fault - YouTube has various test procedures but this shows a suitable test light how to for your type of fault https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=tXzKcEyIOq8

Silly question but have you checked your bulbs lol

It's entirely up to you if you want to buy a locking mechanism but I'd check all wiring.
Someone had a lock issue passenger side left so the garage bought a new lock from vw fitted it in which was a pain in the rear and guess what happened next?. oh the door lock doesn't work. I was standing watching the guy replace this unit and I couldn't help myself and asked him, did you check the wiring between the door?, he said no but I will now. He got power to the motor but it was the earth that snapped.
So I replied you're going to charge the customer for a part that's not needed haha
He replied yes  :signLOL:

Thank you for your persistance fellow forum brethren.  I went and cut into the belly of that pesky conduit and revealed its guts.  You were all right, in that I found one brown earth wire snapped.  I've temp fixed it for now, with a piece of extra wire to take up the slack with some electrical connector boxes.

I just gotta get it properly soldered with heat shrink and it'll be good for many more miles.
