Coolant temp scary low
« on: November 21, 2015, 05:05:41 pm »
I did two hour trips today and the gauge didn't go above 70 once :scared: it was closer to 50 for the majority and did actually drop to 50 at some points... It only rose if I drove aggressively for a bit. What are the effects of the temp being this low?

Anyone had this and know the fix

Try testing it with some diagnostic tools like VAG-COM, in most cases the sensor fail or thermostat fail are common. I guess in your case is the same. If the thermostat isn't working then the fan maybe is cooling all the time. Same with the sensor if it is giving a high temperature the fan maybe is constantly working and cooling the engine. I suggest you to try to diagnose with software. Also sensor and thermostat are pretty cheep to buy :)

This is worth a read http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,78341.0.html

MPG  will be low so it will hit the pocket in this weather.

Yes worth doing research but most have had to do the thermostat or stats.

I'm going for the stats as the tt had the same issue and I should have realised this first.

Add this to your reading list http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/Volkswagen_Golf_GTI_Mk_V/31-WATER-Replacing_Your_Thermostat/31-WATER-Replacing_Your_Thermostat.htm

Give yourself plenty time and you'll find it's no more difficult than any other job.

So bearing in mind im still learning about engines as a whole (ive only changed dv, pvc, cam follower and a cv joint gaitor, and I didnt exactly do.those with ease) it could be any of these three, stats, thermo stat or sesnors?

My temps were fine yesterday, it literally happened today which made me think sensors

Thank you very much doylebros, I'm just curious as to how many stats the 55 reg dsg has as I'm reading 3?   :surprised:

Stupid golf and the second one I've ever owned, the first was a mk1 X reg 1.6 gti  :jumping:

Thanks

The cheaper option is well worth a try after seeing how NOT easy it is to replace the stats  :rolleye:

Did I forget to mention why not check the CTS coolant temp sensor with a multimeter and see what ohms it's kicking out before replacing it?.

As with any job don't just jump in do the research, which by asking questions you,re doing.

On the above jobs well done you saved yourself time and money. However,if your going to do the main thermostat it requires time and not a job for out in the cold as it's easy for it to turn into a ball ache but no harder than a CV. Bootie just few more bits to take off.
