Peskyjones the auxilliary belt and the cambelt are two different things. You will be releasing the aux. belt tensioner and locking it at which point you can remove the aux. belt. Might aswell change it when removed as they are cheap. Further down the line you actually should remove the tensioner aswell makes access much easier.

There is a fair bit of underneath work, but with correctly positioned axle stands its perfectly safe.

Wear long sleeves aswell... my forearms were cut to shreds on the front bonnet slam panel!

I see. yeah I realised that after these comments  :ashamed:

By correctly positioned axle stands, where do you put yours? I put mine in the same place as this picture shows in the past

Do you chock the wheels?

IF I do carry out the work myself I will definitely be wearing long sleeves - its cold when your working outside! Hopefully its not too cold to do it. Wish I had a unit to work in

Thats where i put the jack stands and yes chock the back wheels. Then give the car a shove to test its not going anywhere.

Thats exactly where i put mine. You can chock the wheels but leave your handbrake on, that should be enough. I had all four wheels off the ground to do coilovers so there was no requirement to chock.

Thankfully i had a garage to work in. Still super cold though but i had two fan heaters blowing on me!

Have a bash is all i can say. Hearing all the stories about the job i was very aprehensive to attempt it myself. Wasnt as bad as i imagined though. Its by far the best way to learn stuff about your car aswell!

Just had mine replaced...£300 gone  :sad1:

But the car warms up super quick now and stays at 90  :signLOL:

Yes at my local indy, had the main thermostat replaced.

Took my mechanic the whole day as he's never done it before  :signLOL:

That's quite pricey but better than your local vw as they'd probably want double.

I would have thought no more than £200 if all three for the dsg and less for manual.

If he took all day then he's not very good at what he does  :signLOL:

What's a main stat cost? £35
Three hours labour I have been quoted at my indie and his rate is £33 an hour!
I'm expecting a £150 bill at the worst. (Manual car) £300 is mad imo!

I think the main stat is 50 quid. I'm going to get a few quotes. I don't have much time spare at the moment I think I'd need to dedicate a day to it, so as much as I'd love to be able to do it myself I think I'll bite the bullet and pay for the job.

My Indy has quoted me £250- £300 so seems about the going rate at a Indy.
Still a mad price though for a thermostat!!

That price is absurd folks  :surprised: but I guess garages can charge whatever they wish. I certainly won't be paying silly money when I know well it's no more than 3 hours worth of work and as PT82 says £33 ph is a good price even if it took four hours.

Like all jobs they can turn sour so you need a secure/safe place to leave it until you can solve  any problems that arise - I think to enjoy the challenge this is the wrong time of year for outside never done it before stressful jobs.
If you can get it done at a fair price go for it since there will be plenty other jobs to get a bit spanner rash on!

Just had my thermostat and housing done at Psi tuning today. I was having the same symptoms as you. The temp would only really stay about 70 unless you pushed the car hard then it would rise but would then drop again very quickly afterwards.
Paid £145 for the whole job fitted, however mine is a manual. I believe there's a couple of inline ones on the dsg.
The thermostat was stuck in the open position causing the fault.

That definitely sounds like the main stat as mine does exactly the same.
On the motorway it sits at 70. Rises in stand still slow traffic.
