RNS 510 Rookie Questions
« on: November 24, 2015, 01:13:57 pm »
Hi all, I've recently bought a 2008 Golf GTI MK5 that came factory fitted with an RNS510.
I want to upgrade the software/hardware on the unit, along with the latest maps.
Now I know this question has been asked a billion times, but I'm unsure which one my unit will take.
I've attached a photo of both labels on the HU itself and I've also attached a photo of the Autologic VAG module information in the unit.
Could someone please tell me what version my unit is and which update I'll need to do.
Thanks in advance, Brad.

**Update**
Updated to 4020A and all is working well. Seems my unit doesn't like DVD's what so ever- tried a lens cleaner but no luck.
I've bought the latest maps, but it simply won't read in the drive.
Can I put it on SD? As I'm sure I've read it only will accept 2GB. Any help would be much appreciated!

It's the oldest unit mate, A version. Modified5238 fw can be installed on your unit, but I wouldn't go further than 3xxx. Maps up to date are V13. Still most popular V12.

Thanks for the reply, I feared it was an A unit!
Will 4210 modified give me the postcode entry? - That's all I'm after really.

I had an A, went to 3810 to repartition the hard drive from two to three sectors (you will lose everything but it needs done), then 4020 is the latest safe firmware for this unit, I had it for over two years.
These versions you can update POI via SD etc.

To use v11 or onward maps, you need a modified firmware to allocate more space to maps, otherwise they do not fit. Look for the 60/35/5 version here http://www.rnsfirmware.com/firmware-4020-for-older-units-in-europe-with-hdd-rations-60355/

It will read up to 32gb, but to get maps installed from SD card, you have to insert custom sw cd, so if your laser is dead it will not help. Maybe you're trying to play divix coded dvd's, it only supports orig. mpeg4 format I think.

Custom sw cd? Where can I get my hands on one of those? I burnt about 7 Verbatim DVD+R DL with the same software on with no luck. Then tried a TDK CDR and it worked first time.
I've read that these drives are notoriously fussy on which disks they use, it's winding me up, as now I have no functioning nav.

My Ed. 30 MY2008 came from factory with a RNS-510 version A, like yours. It only liked Verbatim CDs, to upgrade the firmware. I went initially for this firmware: http://www.rnsfirmware.com/firmware-4120-for-units-in-europe-with-hdd-ratios-60355/#comment-4174, that accepted V12 maps.

I follow what the knowledged people share in this forum: http://gpsunderground.com/forum/volkswagen-seat-skoda/34434-vw-rns-510-skoda-columbus-i-firmware-guide-downloads.html.

So I later upgraded to 5238 modified with no issues. Due to these old units being picky with DVD for map updates I sold it and got a version R instead.

I think I was lucky it read well the V12 maps from a Memorex DVD+R DL.
