I need all 4 tyres replacing ideally, so looking for some good but not too pricey ones, what can people recommend?

Currently seen these for £58 on Amazon > http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00AHQPEIK/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1634&creative=19450&creativeASIN=B00AHQPEIK&linkCode=as2&tag=dvdrentalcomp-21 Goodyear - Eagle F1 (Asymmetric) 2 - 225/45R17 91Y - Summer Tyre (Car) - C/A/69  tyres,

Sorry for my total ignorance but will these fit a MK5 GTI on 17" ?

Yes they will fit although rhe car will slightly higher as 40 profile are lower and 35 lower rhan 40 and so forth.
They're an excellent choice of tyres  :happy2:

Does anyone know what my old Eagle F1 tyre's tyres are as they're off a 2013 plate focus ST brand new???
They have a huge edge rim which made the wheels look wider.

Thanks

Yes, they fit. I have them on my GT Sport and I really like them. Very good durability too, even with a great dry and wet grip. The only downside for me is the soft side wall but nothing that would prevent me from buying them again like I'm going to do tomorrow for my rears.

I have Continental SC5 18'' in my Ed. 30 which are great as well, just need to find out what's their durability with my driving style (calm most of the times).

I had them on my car. 225/45/17 is the correct tyre size for 17" wheels in a Golf.

Had these fitted on my fronts last week (18s mind).

So far...underwhelmed. But I think that's because they've not bedded in and it's regularly below 7 degrees. The tyres aren't intended to work below that range. Just bear these things in mind when you wonder why it's not gripping up properly.

Roll on some warmer weather.

Just to add, I think the load rating should be 92 and not 91? Probably doesn't make a difference.

I have the 94 XL variant on my car - previous owner had all tyres XL so I have stuck with it when replacing them- I believe they have stronger sidewalls but they are dearer.
