Help! Cold start issue
« on: December 01, 2015, 01:51:12 pm »

Hi guys.  Im having an issue with cold starts. I have a linked a video of the problem.
Bit of a weird problem really.  Its as if the car is just about to start but at the last second it gives up. Only happens on cold days but not always. Has done it 3 or 4 times in the last couple of months.  The car always starts the second time.
The car has had a recent service with spark plugs changed.  Also had a new battery not long ago.  I dont think its the starter motor as then it woudnt start at all.  Also had that terraclean done (not sure if that helped in anyway)

Any ideas of what to look for?

Cant see the vid in work, but what you describe is very common, they all tend to do it, some days worse than others.

Hold the key on the starter for longer until you are sure that ut has fired up properly

I have tried that but no luck.  If you get a look at the vid you can see its not even turning over after the initial turn. Just kind of stalls just before it ignites.  I can see how cold starts can be quite common and i do have that issue.  but this seems to be different.

Hold the key longer until the car has started properly. you release the key just as it starts to fire

Thanks for the reply. Had cam follower changed at last service. Apr fuel pump which is only about 10months old.   Need to check the pcv and will replace coil packs also for peace of mind.

I don't like the sound of those Apr hpfp as they are prone to failure as I've been reading about them and users having to fork out for new ones

Mine struggled with similar issues. Bought a new battery and it worked even though battery test showed my existing battery seemed fine.

Also as good practice I now turn the key over halfway until the lights come on. Wait about 3 seconds until the lights go off and then I turn the key fully and even in the cold the car now starts perfect.

It used to judder a bit before I did this.

I bought a new battery from vw - it did improve the engine starting as before it would really struggle to start but would still start even if it took a little longer.   I usually do let the lights go off (im used to driving diesels). I think I was just in a rush when i recorded that video.    Its not the pcv as i have checked it today. I think I will get the coilpacks changed.  Iv seen people putting in r8 coilpacks -  how are these different from the standard ones?

I've heard the red blue pink whatever don't mean squat regards better power as they are just newer than your worn ones  :signLOL: whoever says different doesn't know what they are taking about.  :ashamed:

Looks and sounds like the start is spinning well with plenty of juice there to turn it over so I'd rule out battery and starter motor.

Red coil packs are more for show than anything

Have you had VCDS plugged in to it to see if there's any faults stored?
