Ohlins road and track - reliable UK suppliers and best price
« on: December 08, 2015, 06:28:00 pm »
I'm thinking of switching my current suspension (Bilstein B12 Pro kit) for these and I'm looking for an ideal supplier for this kit. Does anyone have any tips on where to buy?

Thanks.

I wish I had the budget for ohlins. The are superb in @vRSAlex s Octavia.

@Bernhard30 has them too I believe.

I didn't ask Alex how much he charges for them as I know I dont have the budget for them at the min but he's pretty competitive! Worth giving him a ring at AKS Tuning!

Im pretty sure they are about 2.5K... not to mention alex thought his ohlins springs were to soft, so factor in that cost as well.

Yeah. Moved the stiffer pair to the other axle and ordered a higher poundage pair

Hmmm, was hoping for less than £2.5k. Not as easy to find stockists of these parts as KW, for example.
I found company called Aurok who are apparently an Ohlins specialist, I'll start with them since they're only 20 miles away.

Based on what I've learnt so far the Ohlins seem to have a unique ride quality and I also like the fact one single adjuster makes them adjustable for either road or track and the DFV interests me. I used Koni FSD's on a Leon FR once which transformed the car and consequently this valving method interests me.
Although I'm by no means an expert on these and have no experience with them personally.

Found this site also: http://www.aktivperformanceparts.co.uk/golf-mk5-2004-2007/ohlins-vw-golf-gti-mk5-coilover-suspension-kit-2003-2008-2211229-381829-823418.php Update - 9/12/15: Just rang them and it went to a generic answerphone service, no business announcement or anything. Hardly encouraging.

Rich, I know nothing of PSS10 but I'll make it my business to get educated, thank you!  :happy2:

OK, quick update...first price received...£2k thereabouts plus fitting/set up.
Are they the same parts fab5freddy indicated in the mods catalogue I wonder??

PSS10's at £700 less as rich83 mentioned are starting to look more appealing possibly.

Colin Chapman: Perfect suspension is soft springs and stiff dampers.

A soft spring keeps the tyre in contact with the ground, perfect for your Great British b-road. Stiff springs are for Silverstone.

People seem to think roll is a bad thing, it isn't, it tells you what the car is doing.

I agree with this, see what the Ariel Nomad can do on track and then off road. Nearly as quick as an Atom on track and it has suspension travel. Granted it suspension system probably doesn't resemble ours but it proves it can still be done and essentially it weighs 670kg. So yes, in those immortal words 'simplify, then add lightness'.

I owned an S4 Elan for a while which was one of Chapmans finest, amazing little car.

The suspension didn't need to deal with the mass of today's cars mind you, the Elan's suspension components are tiny and featherweight compared to today's hardware as the car only weighed 688kg.

Yes, even stripped, my old MK5 was a lard arse - but it was softly sprung & stiffly damped and would run rings around most stuff on track, particularly in the wet. It practically telegraphed its intentions too, lift-off oversteer was something you could use, rather than try and avoid. I hate snappy cars.

Ohlins aren't some fly-by-night outfit, I'd trust their judgement implicitly and set the car up around the kit to compliment it.

What did you have on yours mike? I cant remember.

Got to say that I think the PSS10 are very good. They are quite hard compared to OEM, but not silly hard. They really come into there own when cornering at high speed, the car just feels so balanced and surefooted. Way way better than my previous H&R spring and OEM damper combo, which was (looking back at it) shocking ride quality, high speed cornering felt like it was rocking front to rear and felt so insecure, and ended up hating it.

Eibach coilovers. Essentially a KW V1 damper with different springs.

I got them with the car, rather than choosing them, but was so impressed I kept them. Spending my own money, it'd be Bilstein or Ohlins, I'd prefer the latter, the damper technology on the Ohlins is just so clever.
