Possible flywheel?
« on: December 10, 2015, 07:52:41 pm »
Hey guys

Quick question should the car make a faint rotating noise when the clutch is engaged? If you press the clutch the noise goes quieter, although there's still slight rotating noise.

Not sure if this indicates flywheel or just generally how these cars are? Tried moving off in 3rd etc and it stalls as it should indicating no slipping on clutch I don't think.

How can I check if the flywheel is on it's way out?

Cheers

Could be your thrust bearing on the way out ?

Remove the starter motor and feel or with a prod stick chekc itlf the flywheel has any play in it, moves rattles.

Most likely the concentric slave cylinder showing signs of wear and tear of the bearings if noise goes away when you press the clutch pedal down.

Bearing is fitted to the same cylinder and you my need the remove the gearbox for this.

If the noise is always there when you have your foot off the clutch and not there when you put your clutch pedal down then it's the bearing on the concentric slave cylinder showing signs of wear. Or the dual mass flywheel if your car judder when taking off in first gear?.

@r5gtt cheers for your help. Yep come to think of it there's usuallly judder and kangarooing in first. Would that indicate flywheel? is that a gearbox out job to diagnose? Can also feel vibrations through the clutch peddle although not gear stick.

Cheers

@Ditto

Make sure you check the gear box mount before you waste your money on having the gear box removed to check for any damage as it's a costly job. It does sound like a flywheel issue from what you are discribing but make sure you have a few garages who can confirm this without you going there and telling them the issue. They'll happily take your money and leave you sinking ship without a paddle as I've read a few horror stories in my time like the poor fella who paid £450 to replace a dsg speed sensor without having the proper diagnosis and the speedo still doesn't work.  :scared:

Hope this helps.
