I phoned TPS and they hadn't got a clue what I was talking about, there wasn't a VW spray for lubing the starter motor.
Is it a Quantum lube Alex by chance?
Cheers.

I have a friend in Birmingham who owns a starter alternator recon shop in his late 50's running this place for 25 years so I wouldn't waste my time on wd as this dries up.
Most likely the ring needs loobing but you need to remove the started to do this.

Well, mate didn't have time to look at this problem in the end, had a quick listen and couldn't work out where the noise was coming from.
I'll try an upload a recording of it when I can.
