Dealer service history important or???

Hi guys, just wondering what you all think about service history and do you all use the dealer and are indi service stamps as good as?.
When I bought my tt it cost me £6000 in 2010 and it had part service history upto 50k were stamped and the rest were missing and no record of a cam belt but I replaced that within two weeks of purchase as I would any car for piece of mind.
Car was in very good condition and the 100k stamp was done by an indi from the dealer in Blackburn... Car ran for five years without any major issues... obviously there was wear and tear on bushes after a further 15k but that was expected like the clutch front wishbone bushes thermostat after a further 20k and rear control arm bushes. I didn't mind as I fitted poly bushes to the complete front and rear.

Personally it wouldn't bother me where it was done. Obviously it would be a bonus if it had a full dealer history, but very few cars do these days. Would depend on the car too.

It would be advantageous if there were invoices etc to back up and work done anywhere other than main dealers.

It wouldn't bother me either. As said there'll not be many cars about with full dealer history. I've always serviced or repaired my car myself and if there's stuff I'm not keen on doing I'll take it to a vag specialist

My oil has been changed at least every 5k miles, the car is on its 3rd cambelt at 75k miles, will only ever use genuine parts and the car wants for nothing. But I don't have many receipts from Seat. Either been an independent specialist or myself.

Im not overly bothered who had serviced the car as long as they were done at the correct intervals and the correct spec oil was used. Just because the car has been exclusively serviced by a dealer, it is no way an indication of how well a car is looked after IMO.
 
I always check for things like Cambelt changes and DSG oil and filter changes are done at the correct times - its gives me an insight into the owners attitude to car maintenance.

If you have done some or most of your servicing then keep every receipt. As it will have dates on etc and you can tell the new buyer you know what you are doing and kept a strict service arrangement by yourself.

There's nothing worse than huge gaps in a cars service history, so as long as you do the above or go to an independent garage, then show it.

IMO as long as the servicing has been completed at the allotted intervals it's fine.

I bought my 2006 GTI  a few months back with full VW history apart from the latest serviced which was carried out by a garage local to the sellers address.  They used the correct oil etc, so i'm not expecting ti to blow up any time soon just because they were not a VAG approved service garage...;)

Maybe back in the day when you needed a full dealer history to keep any hopes of a warranty intact,but not these days

Any v.a.t registered garage can service your car without effecting your rights.

I'd have no qualms in buying without dealer history, I buy privately as well to avoid stealer prices ,but then that's taboo for some folk too

Makes me feel a whole lot better knowing there are others who think a good collection of receipts for work carried out or parts them selves paint a big picture of how a car has been maintained by the owner.
I tend to do all the work myself as I'm able and always keep receipts of any parts purchased as proof.

me personally i dont think its that important to be fully dealer serviced.  but on the other hand i wouldnt want it done at the likes of halfords auto centre and what not.  i'd still like to see a history of it being serviced by a specialist if possible

I also don't believe in long life servicing like VAG recommend as this is why many people have engine failure IMHO. lack of frequent oil and filter changes causes this.
