Best tyre for our winters? Or do I stick with brand new summer tyres?

I'm looking to buy a decent set of tyres for my Pirelli GTI...
When I bought the car this year it came with a set of brand new budget tyres which have been really good to be fair.. But now the cold weather is coming in looking for a decent set to change to over the cold winter months.
Has anyone got any recommendations? I mainly want them to work well in the cold when there is ice on the roads and in the rain...

If it's your only set of wheels/tyres then get some decent All Seasons... they are good enough in winter and summer.
If you plan on using a separate set of wheels, then most of the leading brands of winter boot are very similar in my experience... I'm currently running Nokian WR A3's.

Am I daft wanting Pirelli's just because my car is a Pirelli edition...
I was going to go for Pirelli Nero GT's as summer tyres as they are reasonably priced and will look well on my Pirelli alloys...
It's just the winters I'm stuck on.

Or do I just have brand new summers tyres and make do with them? When looking for a set I keep getting drawn to the 'wet' rating more then anything else...

We haven't needed winter tyres at all so far this winter... wouldn't bother with all seasons either, like running round in wellies all year cos for one week it's a bit snowy.
Especially down south.
in scotland i'd say have a winter and summer wheel and tyre set.

Been way too mild for winter tyres East Midlands way, barely drops below 6 degrees at night 

Annoying tbh, I love a snow sesh' but not too fussed this year as sold my winter 225 40 18's 

I tried a set of Nankang SV2's for a couple of winters and although they were poop in dry conditions, in snow and ice they were a solid 8/10 for base grip and fun

I'd go Goodyear Ultra Grip next time I think.

He wants winter tyres, why not all seasons if you're running one set?  At least if it does snow he's not going to be stuck on a mountain somewhere.... sure they are a compromise but it's a worthwhile option if he can't afford a full set of spare wheels and tyres.

Lol at Rich, bet those will be 'interesting' in the cold and wet.  Lad at the local Indy Subaru garage runs those on his STI.

I've tried the Ultragrip Performance 2 and 8, they are a great tyre in the snow, but not so great in the wet... The Nokian WR A3 I've found a better all round winter tyre

lots of people buy winters but they dont actually need them.
i can see the point of winters AND summers. but can't see why you'd sacrifice grip and handling over say, an eagle f1 or similar tyre, for the occasion when it's snowy out there. Even in the cold once a bit of heat has gotten into some f1's they stick pretty well.

I went up to the pyrenees last year with the eagle f1s, they were ok did go sideways once though. May invest in some snow chains.
