DSG slow to change gears
« on: December 29, 2015, 05:45:28 pm »
I've noticed for the second time recently that the gears seem to hold for longer before switching up. Specifically 3rd to 4th and 4th to 5th. Normally, maintaining the same throttle pressure, the revs will rise to somewhere between 1500 & 2000 before switching up. Today 3rd gear held at 3000+ revs! Driving along a flat road so need to hold lower gear. Same for 4th. It gets brought to my attention by the sound of the engine, almost like it is in sport mode, I even look down to check I'm not in sport! Like I say this happened twice recently.

I'm not sure if it's related, by since I had my main thermostat replaced, I think I can hear a knock/clunk sometimes when I think the gears are changing.

Anyone heard of this?

Try a dsg reset/calibration via VCDS if you have access to it?

I actually did one about two months ago. Worth doing it again? Also, it has only happened twice in the past two weeks so I wont know if its worked for a while

one thing I noticed before I did the reset was that if I went from neutral to drive, without any throttle it would run in 1st and continue in 1st, but after I did the reset it would switch to 2nd after a minute or two and stay. Not sure.if.its related or I did the reset properly.

Did you do the relevant runs after? Like keep in a certain rev range in gears 3 and 6 I think it is. And harsh braking and acceleration. All so the clutches re learn the levels.

Sorry peskyjones, I've read somewhere that you have to remain at around 3000rpm for 5 minutes continuously or it doesn't reset. Thats why I haven't bothered doing this reset. VW told me my 55 reg has the latest dsg software so it doesnt need a reset after forking out £145 for a diagnostic which was a total waste of money as I doubt they did a check.
I feel I have the same issues but haven't told anyone or put a post up as I keep thinking it's my driving style  :stupid:

Which issue the faint clunk or the holding revs? Does yours do it often?

When it holds the revs next time take your foot completely off the accelerator. This might let the car know that 3rd gear acceleration isn't necessary anymore.

Worst case, hit the paddle and change up to 4th yourself.

Pretty sure it'll learn the values by itself if absolutely necessary. See Rosstech Wiki:

"NOTE: If the test drive cannot be performed in the recommended way or the necessary time, any remaining adaptations will be performed automatically during normal driving."

I feel it holds revs for way too long and I have to change gears myself.

It happened twice today, took my foot off for a considerable amount of time and still no shift

I wonder if its anything to do with brakes, maybe sticking caliper?

As we have a common failure with calipers, there's no harm in jacking each wheel up and checking them.
My car felt okay today as I was driving quite calm. When I put my put down on the pedal it takes a split second and then kicks in so seems okay.

Getting a health check done at a vw audi specialist for 35 quid, see if they can fix anything inadvertently. Need the health check done anyway
