Buying mk6 gti. What to look for?
« on: December 29, 2015, 09:59:46 pm »
Decided to trade my mk5 to a mk6 gti.
Any buying tips to look for and if its a dsg how often does the oil and filter need to be serviced? Xenon and curved xenons the same? seen some with halogen rear lights and xenon front and some with leds rear and xenon front?

Do the usual HPI check obviously.

What year is the car? check through service history and mileage to make sure its on point.

DSG change is every 20k I think. pull of slow in the dsg and see if there is any juddering, it should run smooth. go in all gears etc

It's a 2010 model. Shouldn't the dsg be serviced between 40k km? Don' know how many miles that will be.

Make sure you get the timing chain tensioner changed or you could end up like me having to replace the lump

See Below Link, Regarding Engine Issues;

http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=262793.0

How to test DSG on Testdrive;

Take the car for a good long test drive. The DSG will cause an issue when it gets to operating temperature.

When setting off from stand still the car should not jerk. Also a way to tell is drop it in reverse and it should not kangaroo in reverse too.

Also say your doing 30MPH (In D), The Gearbox sill probably be in 5th Gear cruising.

Slowly apply the brakes and let the car come to a stop gently. The DSG should drop gears very smoothly.

If there is a jerk say from 3rd going into 2nd then the DSG Mechatronic Unit is on its way out.

However these issues don't normally relate to the DSG Mechatronic Unit on its way out. Sometimes all you need is a DSG calibration (Reseting the DSG).

Also it's always good to drive in D Mode, S Mode and also use the paddles.

Also I would like to add the Gearbox itself is strong and very well built. The Mechatronic Unit is what are common to go.

I've also heard the clutch pack can warp causing the jerkiness.

Hope it help

2010 is a high risk year for the above if its the CCZA and CCZB engine - this is also worth a read

Also search the top cam bearing housing for replacement - fault G40 error that's another big bill.

DSG box oil and filter to be replaced every 40,000 miles.
Its not like engine oil its far more long life.
