Petrol, Shell V power, BP etc etc.....
« on: January 03, 2016, 10:25:43 pm »
What do you guys put in?

What is the octane level of the Shell V power?

Put it in my car for months now possibly a year straight and always like to only put that in. Tank got run right down this week and had to resort to a local BP station. Used the "fancy" stuff they offer and think it said 97 octane... Is Shell the best you can get on the streets (UK)? :driver:

I have always used Shell V-Power, which is 99 octane.

Tesco Momentum is also good for these cars, but I've never used it.

Personally I wouldn't use anything else.

Tesco and shell are the same apart from shell is ment to have some added cleaning additives in as well but so what our cars are direct injection so makes no differences. I only use tesco 99 Ron fuel as it's closer, if shell was closer I'd use that it's as simple as that with me. These are the only 99 Ron fuels in the uk I think.

It'll be 99 Ron in every shell garage as longs as your holding the premium nozzle.

MRC tuning (Audi RS gurus) believe that some shell stations (which are all franchised) may have sold 95RON as 99RON. Would take some collaboration with tanker drivers. This is just a theory based on their observations.

They have told me they've had instances where they've had cars making significantly lower power on their dyno on shell 99, dumped the tank and refilled with Tesco 99, and hey presto power is back. They had one such instance with a tuned RS6, and the power difference was almost 50hp.

I always try to go for Tesco 99 when I can in my Audi. However, I've found the Mk5 GTi seems quite happy on 95. It dyno'd at 197hp recently on 95. The engine was standard at the time, has a fair amount of carbon build up, and was dyno'd with bonnet shut. Quite happy with that. It has now been bluefin'd, so more inclined to use 99RON.

I was always under the impression that V-Power was 98 RON, shows how much attention I've been paying at the pumps!

Interesting! That'd be a bit naughty if it was true. Only run mine on V Power, it was mapped for V Power at R-Tech. I'd like to think I'm paying for 99.

V Power makes my car run the smoothest but for MPG it is similar to Tesco Momentum which is quite a lot cheaper.

According to Wikipedia, Shell V-Power in UK has a 99 RON rating. Apparently V-Power is rated at 98 RON in Netherlands and 97 RON in Greece.

I had to run the GTI on unleaded for a month and then switched to Shell V-Power. It definitely feels smoother in accelerating and on the motor way over the last couple of days. What I'm worried about is the previous owner having run it on unleaded and all the detergents in the V-Power dislodging built up carbon somewhere and clogging something?

I hadnt a clue about v power etc when i got my GTI tbh 2 year ago... I waked morrisons fuel in for around a year until a garage told me about v power and how much better it was etc. I probs have loads of carbon build up thats not counting any crap petrol previous owner put in if he did... anyone had issues of build up of carbon like?

Interesting that this post has come up. Ive always used Tesco high octane stuff because its close to myhouse and currently £1.04 a litre. Bought my 6R 2months ago and used it since. Ive been averaging 19.5mpg which has been a little thirtsy compared to the GTI. Anyways... I decided to have a bash with Shell Nitro £1.11 per litre. Sonce yesterday i have been averaging 26mpg. Driving in the same manner, on the same roads etc. Havent had a whirl at the spirited driving as yet but so far so good.
