Is the edition 30 engine the most tuneable
« on: January 11, 2016, 09:03:00 am »

General question really, I am really impressed with what can be extracted from the edition 30 engine, 370bhp ish for relatively little outlay, no new injectors or turbo etc. A real tuning goldmine.  Are any of the MK7 engines tuneable in the same way for example ?, can the R make 400 with bolt ons ?. I can't think of another car in any brand where you can achieve such massive tuning gains as the Ed lump 220-370 !  :jumpmove:

I'd guess you'd need a bigger turbo to break 400 on the mk7, but as for reaching 400, Revo seem to think so:

There's probably much more to choose from with bolt ons and software with the TFSI ed30. It's  a bit more of a known quantity.

I know some TSI cars, mk6 on, had cam chain problems. Maybe a consideration.

Buying a clean ed30 and taking it to 370bhp would be miiiiiles cheaper than doing it with a mk7 R!!!

The s3 engine CDL is slightly better for tuning than the ed30 BYD. Not much in it though.

Old Saabs used to be the same.  Capable of huge power with the standard engine!

I always take 300hp as the average ED30 power hike.  Doable with a 0.4 bar increase in boost on an otherwise standard engine.

350+ seems to me it's running the turbo way past it's comfort zone, so long term reliability could be a question mark.  I'm talking 50K miles, not just a few long distance road trips.

Agree, pushing the ed30 to stage 2+ will tax the turbo, for me the price of getting that refreshed later in the future  if needed is worth the ride. tbh it is so fast I can't drive it hard most of the time at all, but it's worth it for those over taking opportunities when they come.

Certainly doesn't look like the MK7 is as tuneable out of the box

I think the same principles apply to the mk7 R, it's just that the ed30 in particular is a somewhat detuned k04 engine (no doubt not to step on the toes of the R32 power/price bracket).

If you take the TFSI S3 for example, they're 260ish bhp? And map to 300. The ed30 is 230 bhp and... maps to 300. Practically identical k04 engine.

So the ed30 seems more tunable than other TFSIs/TSIs, but it's just that it has a bit more slack to be taken up.

The MK7R should do around 400 at stage 2 level

1.1 bar (IIRC) for the S3 and 0.9 bar for the ED30, otherwise identical engines

400 from the MK7 sounds fun!  The standard car can do 0-60 in 4.43 seconds, so it must be under 4 with 400hp!

Doesn't look like they require a fuel pump upgrade for that either. I don't know a thing about the engine in the MK7 R, do they still have the pump running off the camshaft ?, guessing they have improved that problematic follower design ?

Yeah it still has the same pump setup but VW switched from the tappet to a roller follower, which solves that problem!

It also has VVT on both cams, timing chain and a few other minor improvements.
