Ticking clicking noise from cabin
« on: January 15, 2016, 06:22:43 pm »
Recently when my car is left to idle it sometimes makes a ticking/clicking noise I can hear it from inside the car and it goes away as soon as you pick the revs up but it comes back and sometimes doesn't when left to idle again . I have tried turning the air con on or off to see if I can replicate the symptoms but nothing seems to trigger it its just completely random. Could this be  the carbon canister or should I be concerned .i still have a little warrenty left on the car but as this happens randomly I don't no when it will happen so feel it will be a wasted trip to the dealer .

Wondering if anyone else is experiencing this in there MK5 GTI

Hi moat owners find that they're cam follower tappet in the fuel high pressure fuel pump has worn out or getting to the point it will need replacing so I'd get that checked out or maybe replaced if it's never been replaced before. Here's what it looks like in four stages courtesy of a fellow member posting it on here and me saving the picture for future use.

Hi thanks for the reply .
I did think about the cam follower and now it's been mentioned I will check it. would it not make the noise all the time on idle tho if this was failing or failed . It happens intermittently & I wasn't sure if the car runs a cycle for the carbon canister to run and that may be why it's intermittent, is it normal to hear a carbon canister from inside the car.

Hello, that's quite alright.

Depends on how often and how long the noise carries on for.
This can be signs for wear and gradually get worse on more wear.

I've never listened out for the CC so couldn't say sorry.

Ok no worries it cant be normal then as I don't  need to listen out for it more I just started hearing it in the last couple of weeks. I haven't been able to get the car to make the noise when I am parked in a suitable place to pop the bonnet to identify where in the bay the noise is coming from but I will check the follower anyway .

Add this thread to your reading list since you've still got some warranty left - http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,101010.0.html

Cheers doylebros.
I had a read through the thread . I wouldn't say it sounds like a diesel more like something detonating ticking for a bit and then all of a sudden it goes again-only on idle . car drives spot on but whatever it is I think it needs further investigation . I'm hoping to pop the bonnet next time it happens to at least pin point the area the noise is coming from hopefully it's just the CC . I owned a mk1 Leon cupra and I could hear that going off but this seems a bit more amplified.

Bring the chain point to the selling garages attention as your thoughts in writing (which will allow a bit extra time for an abnormal warranty time claim) potentially saving you a good few quid.

I will be putting it in for a major service before the warranty expires gives me a month or two to investigate further if I feel the need to I will ask them to document this when I take it for the service .

I've also had a ticking noise which was the fuel line vibrating at idle I just unclipped. It up beside the water bottle and gave it a pull then clipped it in again and it sorted it ! I had horrors of it being the cam chain tensioner

I echo this - took 20 seconds to find and fix!
Had the same problem, a rapid ticking under 1k revs that went away as soon as you touched the throttle

Thank you neiller & thecremeegg after popping the bonnet & knowing where to look I could see straight away the fuel line was not clipped in.
Re clipped in no more ticking .  :drinking: cheers
