Hi from Norwich
« on: January 21, 2016, 07:59:14 pm »
Hi, I'm Alex from Norwich.
I've just bought a Manual Tornado Red '56' plate GTI, it's only done 36000 miles and has immaculate VW service history. I'm excited to say the least but I've not even seen it yet!

My first question (of many I expect) is, the car comes with 3 months auto protect warranty, but as its from a VW main dealer they've said for an extra £500 odd, they'll try to get it approved for Das Welt Auto which would mean 2 years full VW warranty. Firstly, what do you guys think of the value for money and also does anybody have any experience in making warranty claims with slightly modified vehicles?

Lastly, I work as a car valeter so if anyone has any questions I'll do my best to help.

Thanks

Alex

Thanks for the welcome. I went to see the car yesterday and forgot to take any pictures! It wasn't quite as good cosmetically as I was hoping for, the drivers bolster is very worn and has a tear in it, the engine cover has been cracked and then glued together, the o/s front arch is bubbling and the wheels are a bit corroded in places. Even so, I think i'd struggle to find a mechanically better car, it drove brilliantly! If I can do a deal with the dealership taking the bad points into account i'm going to go ahead with the purchase. If anyone has any advice on sorting the bad points they'd be much appreciated, I know they're very common problems.

would guess it would be the type of mileage it has done, must be lots of small journeys ( lots of use) rather than motorway mileage not as much hammer

Hi Alex
I am also from Norwich,  don't see too many Tornado reds around here. Have you picked the car up yet? How is it?
BTW this forum is a brilliant source of help and advice,  had my GTI for 5 years now,  it has helped me out lots! It WILL make you spend money though,  you have been warned!
Eddie NL is the man for retro fits/vcds.  He fitted some things for me,  top bloke.

Fish.

Hi all

I picked the car up and I love it! Test driving it was my first drive of a MK5 GTI and i'm sure i've bought the right car for me  :happy2:

Unfortunately, it's not been without issue though

 - On the drive home, about 2 miles from home, a really bad brake squeal started! (and has continued ever since) i've taken it back and they've suggested the nearside rear caliper is binding and could be described as 'failed' so they're going to replace under warranty.

 - The high level rear brake light doesn't work, again, will be covered under warranty but as far as I can understand, it's quite a job

 - And most annoying to me, as far as I can tell, the pre sale service seems to consist of just a stamp in the book! The oil was rank. Not sure what to do about this yet.

These extra issues have put a bit of a downer on the car to be honest but I am excited for the car I think i'm going to end up with! On the plus side, the wing has already been approved for replacement and i've had a quote i'm happy with for a proper wheel refurb so those issues are on the way to being sorted.

Alex

As these cars are now around 10 years old - there will inevitably be the odd issue here and there. Once sorted though, you won't be disappointed.

You can upload pics by using Photo Bucket:-

It took me a while to work out also!

Here's some pics then

Here she is, notice the difference in wheel colour...

Trying (and failing) to stop brake squeal

Decided to clean up the wheels (only rear so far) as they were off

Process was -
AG Acid wheel cleaner and left to dwell then PW rinse
Auto Finesse deironiser, left to dwell, agitated then PW rinse
Clayed
2 x Layers of Collinite 476s
Refitted and happy with them bar the corrosion, full refurb in due course

Also decided to tidy up exhaust tips, couldn't get them to a satisfactory level so will be replaced at some point

Thanks for looking :)
