Massive fail for me thid morning as well. My soot chucker with it's great low rev torque was beaten by the snow. Couldn't even get off my estate ! Thats's with 18x8" wheels fitted with Good Year F1 Asymetricals.

Didn't matter if the TC was on or off, I was going no where quick.

Lets hope it get better tomorrow !

Cheers

Andrew

I couldn't get off your estate either, even with no snow!

I'm in sheffield and not having much joy with Toyo T1R's! Dreading the drive home from work!!!

Cant be as bad as the Z4 mate

That was awful in the slightest bit of snow.

Ive found the GTI to be ok in the snow, a lot better than i expected.

Any taken the plunge and running winter tyres? Ive often run some steelies over the winter months but to be honest the tyres are past there best.

So ive been looking at getting a set of winter specific tyres, ebay, part worns are about £160-180 for a set, 205 55 16. With the nature of my job i often have to travel on ungritted side roads in housing estates etc, as i visit clients at home. Few too many minor accidents at the moment for my liking.

Anyone experiences good/bad of decent brands, worthwhile etc....

You can get 'Winter Rims for Golf GTI' for about £52 each from a dealer iirc.  These are for the tyre size you mention, but are actually better than the 17" or 18" sizes as you can also fit normal snowchains to them.  I've got some Vredestein tyres, who specialise in winter tyres and they are amazing.  I've also heard good things about Michelin Pilot Alpin.  Finally, watch out for the offset for rims off ebay, the ideal is ET49, but lots (from audis and mk4 golf) are ET42.

I already have the steelies in the garage as i ran them last winter.

Ive just opted for some from ebay - rather spend alittle on some winter rubber then trash another BBS RC from my anni.

Had a quick read on the brand - lassa snoways, so see how they go.

I've got Bridgestone Potenza's on 18's and the only problem I've had was in stop-start traffic going up a fairly steep hill in heavy snow.  Other than that car has been spot on.

What about Polo GTI 16s (mini Monzas) with winter tyres? Are they the right offset for the Golf?
Only 250.1bhp - but with that noise, who cares?
