Can belt advice
« on: February 02, 2016, 07:17:24 pm »
Hi guys

Just need to clear something in me head and would like a little bit of advice.

Have had me on 5 years now and only really done 20,000 since I changed the belt but it was changed in 2011 thought it was done in 2012 but as I have just checked and found it. I know it's either every 40,000 or 4/5 years.

I know some people will get excited but it's going in the Vw for a dsg oil and filter and a normal oil and filter to keep the stamps up in the book as its been done each year.

Boils down to cost to be honest I know it could be a lot dearer if it goes but it's just with the service stuff it's a total of £777 but Vw will do it for £700 if it's all done at once after me asking.

Just got a few things to pay out for at the moment and got no money until next month.

Just wondering if there's away of checking the belt from the top and just getting it done next month now it's on my mind . I pretty much l think it will be ok really just wanted to check if any one had any advice besides the obvious to change it.

But when it was done it was the upgraded belt not sure what they meant well it's obvious but don't know if it's meant to be a better one.

Know it's a long winded but just checking.

Cheers guys

It's very unlikely it will go in the next month, especially since you've only done 20,000 miles since it was last changed. Just get it changed when you can to put your mind at rest, but it doesn't have to be an immediate priority.

In my previous golf I would get it changed on the 4 year mark regardless of how many miles it has done. A month wont hurt that though, and you'd be incredibly unlucky for it go this month.

Just do it the next month!  :happy2:

If you plan on using the dealers to do the cambelt and waterpump change, see if they have a special offer on. As a guide, Manchester VW is doing Cambelt and Water pump for £350 all in which isn't a bad price to be fair.

I think you're worrying too much. When I bought my Ed. 30 with a bit more than 35k miles, it still had the original cam belt. The car had 5 years (after being sold, but in reality it had 6 years after being built) so when it had a full mechanical overhaul the cam belt was replaced. It was still in good conditions.

I replace the cam belts every 5 years, or earlier if the car makes +60k miles.

My tt belt kit damper water pump was replaced when I purchased it in 2010 and again in November 2014 as the water pump started leaking and that was 40k miles later when the belt was due to be replaced anyway and the belt was showing signs of were but nothing to cry about as was the water pump that failed.

Op can wait till pay day as 20k miles doesn't sound bad although a lot of stop and start driving can also cause premature failure.
