Moving to Southampton - areas to avoid?
« on: January 27, 2016, 07:08:07 pm »
Considering moving to Southampton as we can't justify paying Winchester prices however i'm unsure these days where the "good" parts are or places to avoid.

Places to avoid i gather are - Thornhill, Shirley warren, Lordshill, Millbrook, and Western.

Any recommendations?

Sorry - can't help you with the 'nice' areas, but you can add Portswood to the list of areas to avoid. I say this as it was where I lived in Southampton in my student days...

Cheers Dave. Must admit that even after living in Winchester for 20 years i'm a little unknowing about Southampton and only hear the horror stories.

I lived in Winchester for 11 years, right in the city centre, before moving toward Southampton way. I can't think of any 'nice' areas close to Southampton centre that I'd like to live in. Maybe consider the outskirts eg Hedge End (easy access to M27, train station, Peter Cooper lol!), Horton Heath, Chilworth. North Baddesley...

Portswood and Highfield are student areas. Swaythling and Basset are nice.
Weston, St Marys and Shirley/Millbrook are rough areas.
Chandler's Ford is nice, as is Hedge End.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

After viewing 10 properties this weekend which i will NEVER do again, we have had an offer accepted on a three bed property with off road parking in Coxford. Looking at crime stats, both published and the ones my wife has access to its not a bad area.

Heres the good bit. It has two custom built out house, one side is a work shop (built 2 years ago) with airlines, the other is a gym with accordion steel/wood clad doors.

Now comes the expensive part!

Congrats! sounds brilliant. I'm at Southampton Uni staying in the Mayflower Halls which is very close to Coxford. Will keep my eyes peeled for your GTD :happy2:

I know your struggle, I was living in London all my life and I loved my life there. The problems for me started when I had to move away from London to Southampton. I found a good place in Thornhill and the price was awesome, but I had no idea that the area was bad. Only good thing from that trip was man with van London transporting service. They saved my ass because I waited for the last day to find someone who will move my stuff. Anyway, I moved away from Thornhill and now I live in Netley. I love it there, my neighborhood is beautiful and worth the price.

Do you have any updates here?  I'm asking you 'cause soon I'll need to move to Southampton. I got a new job and because of that, I'll need to move there. I even found a new house for my family. I also found a site about why avoid cheap moving companies and to be honest I didn't know that I have to take care of so many things lol. But at least now I know with whom to work in order to keep all my goods safe. So, please, in case that you have some news related to the area that I need to avoid while moving to Southampton share it. Thanks in advance.
