Steering Angle Sensor - Intermittent Fault
« on: January 28, 2016, 12:00:39 pm »
Well further to my previous thread last month, this problem is still unresolved.

On the first drive in the morning, the steering wheel light, ESP and tyre pressure light come on for a minute and go out. They don't usually come back on after that.

VCDS records a steering angle sensor fault as intermittent, this is in the ABS module. I've reset it using VCDS, including steering limit stop adaptation. But it hasn't cured it.

When I got the car in December the owner said the light came on when he switched from (smaller) sized winter tyres to the summer tyres. However, the tyres on one axle were the wrong profile.

I've changed the tyres to the correct size, but the problem persists. The steering makes no funny noises and seems fine, so I'm hoping it's not the rack.

Am I looking at changing the sensor itself now?
Anything else I can do with VCDS?

Advice is greatly appreciated on this fault.

Cheers for that mate. I always enjoy his videos.

He talks about the clock Spring, which could be the failed component, but my understanding is that the steering angle sensor is independent of the clock Spring on the MK5?

In VCDS, the measuring block for the angle sensor shows it moving and knowing the position of the wheel.

On a related note, the previous owner had a full 4 wheel alignment done when this light came on.

I've on had two faults like that one was the clock spring and the other was cured by remaking all the connections after the owner failed in a modding job - cheapest first check your connections!

Not sure if the problem is related but a few months ago my car threw up a yellow steering wheel light. It was a steering torque sensor intermittent error, like you I did all the tests and the light went out after clearing the fault but a few days later it would come back on.

The light starting coming back on more and more frequently until I went to start the car and the car cut out and the clocks reset. This was diagnosed as a dying battery, since I changed the battery the light hasn't come back on once (touches wood!)

So it might be worth checking your battery too.

Yep I just had the problem few weeks ago. Intermittent error lights for ABS/ESP. Changed the battery after AKS checked and confirmed the battery state of health was poor but not the state of charging.
Changed the battery and now no more faults. Starts better as well :driver:

I don't think it's that mate. My steering wheel light also comes on.

Plus I changed the battery a month ago.

I've booked it into Statllers anyway. Not something I fancy doing myself and I clearly need some professionals to look at it.
