On the subject of trackers, I've been thinking about using a cheap andriod phone hidden in the car connected to a permanent 12v alongside google's find my phone function https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/6160491?hl=en.
Possibly not the best and it won't let you know immediately if your car has been stolen, but at least you'll know where it is when you do know it's gone, and it's cheap.
 I'll bet most people have an old phone kicking about at home or work.
I've tried it with my phone and it's quite accurate. Just needs GPS turned on all the time though

I bought one of those things off ebay and the blasted thing didn't work as it wanted a 2g sin which I'm sure mine was but still didn't work. it's worth a shot if you can get it to work as you'll be able to call the number and trace exactly where the car is amd alert the police too.
