Scam reply to advert ?
« on: February 01, 2016, 01:21:52 pm »
Hi all,  Just put my Mk5 onto Pistonheads and almost immediately I get an email reply asking if the car is for sale, then after I give some more info he says he's satisfied and ready to buy (unseen) and then a load of blurb about paying via paypal :

I do appreciate the way you answered my questions!. I'm satisfied with it's condition and i believe i wont be disappointed. I want you to know i am serious buyer and i'm sure he's gonna love and enjoy it more than you did. My mode of payment will be via PayPal because i don't have access to my bank account online but i have it attached to my PayPal account.

Sounds like a scam of some kind to me, has anyone had a similar response when selling ?
Thanks, Tom

Scam. Ignore and do not engage.

I don't accept paypal when selling a car. Cash and you come with me to the bank to deposit it, or bank transfer.

Never accept PayPal when selling a car... PayPal does not cover vehicle purchases and you will lose any money paid in to your account, as it will either be subject to a chargeback or removed due to an 'unauthorised or fraudulent transaction'

They may have nicked someone's credit card and personal details and are intending to use that to pay via paypal.

At least it's a bit of a better scam attempt than one I got years ago when selling my old MK4 GTi...the dude had spelling mistakes/nonsensical sentences all over the place, but the best was that he said he wanted to buy my horse! I kid you not.

I constantly got sent scam emails when i had my car on pistonheads.

Watch for the one they send you a link asking if its your car. takes you to a pistonhead homepage but if you enter sign in it gives them your login details. happend to me and they changed details of my ad and luckily someone on here messaged me about it to tell me. i knew it was a scam but i left the page opend in my phone and went on a few hour later.

I wouldn't sell a car via paypal and who buys a car without coming to see it.

I had just received one through my gumtree advert, the guy claimed he couldn't come view the car as he was both death and in a wheelchair. Felt like he was trying to hard with that one!

I only received this Saturday. someone called Brian but I can't reply to the text. Although DON'T ever reply to a text alike as my gumtree acc was hacked last year as my password stopped working and some cu** put a polo advert in my profile and delete my car off  :surprised:

Hi, I want to buy your ad from gumtree, please contact me at: cole4925@gmail.com

Ask for their mobile number so you can discuss the sale in privacy :happy2:

What do these hackers get from you, other then potentially your email address?
I emailed the guy back as I'd received a text from gumtree with the 'scammer' asking for more pics, to which I obliged.

After them asking for PayPal details I didn't message back.

They can hack and disable your advert account which os a nuisance or send you viruses amd hack other stuff on your pc laptop.its happened to a friend and my wife.
