Dreaded DSG gear lights flashing
« on: February 07, 2016, 05:55:57 pm »
Hi all, after a bit of advice for my sick ED30 DSG (56 plate)...

Drove home today and when reversing into a car space, I noticed it lost drive. The gears on the dashboards were flashing. Managed to get the lever back into 'Park' and now it will not move out of Park anymore. In fact, the only way I could get the key out of the ignition was to disconnect the battery. If I try to turn the ignition as normal, nothing happens at all. I have to leave it in ignition position 1 for a few seconds and then try and engage the starter for it to then fire up.
I have given it time and then tried again to see if the box thinks it's finished its driving cycle and reset, but alas, not a chance.

A few days ago, when switching from manual mode to auto, the lights started flashing. I put it back into manual and then auto again and it went back to normal. Other than that one time, it has been driving faultlessly.

Having a quick look on the net, aside from possible mechatronics, maybe it's the gear selector?
The options I can think of are:

1) See if any member in South London has Vagcom. Will home Vagcom be able to diagnose the problem though or does it need VW or specialist to diagnose?

2) Get it to VW Bromley for diagnosis. Would VW uk give some goodwill?
Guessing the car would need a 'full lift' to get it there? Anyone know rough ideas of cost for approx 6 miles?

Sorry for long message but I'm lost at what to do. Help!

I wouldn't go to VW. I'd try and find an independent gearbox specialist near you if possible. It will be nowhere near the prices vw charge. You are looking at about 2k plus if it's just the mechatronic unit, or more likely 5k plus if vw say you need a whole new box. There's a place not too far from you in Rochester called BBA-reman. Also vw will probably charge you about £70 just for plugging it in for a diagnostic.

I asked the dealers if my dsg failed what would it cost to replace and they said there would only be good will if the cars been fully serviced by VW as I was quoted £1750 for the dsg mechatronic replacement only. Box was £4000 iirc.
When was the dsg last serviced?.

I was charged £145 plugging in.

Please don't trust the above company bba recrap as they screwed my tt cluster and sent it back to me even worse than it was. I repaired it myself in the end.

There's a guy in Gloucestershire that's well recommended. can't remember if I saved the address but if you want it pm me and I'll try and source it for you.

I'm the same with book marks  :signLOL:but not those clowns for certain £130 with a worse off cluster but this is a DSG mechatronic unit. I'll find out another company not to go to as there's a car forsale in the forsale section that's supposed to have had it done a service on it but they failed to repair the mechatronic unit so it had to come out again  :scared: imagine the mechanic replacing it and having to remove it again  :congrats: to him.  oh and guess what??? after contacting them again they'd changed hands so it's a new owner now apparently when this go wrong people change owners and keep the same name

I've got a Rosstech VCDS Hex + Can, which will do all the diagnostics you need to find out whats wrong with your car.  I'll do it for free, but I live in Barking, East London.  You're welcome to come and get it done if you like.

Never used this company, but the Internet says they've done a lot of mechatronic units. £300 for the mechatronic rebuilt. Then whatever it costs you to have the it removed and refitted.

Thanks everyone, really appreciate the replies  :happy2:

My problem is that I cannot get the car into gear, so for it to go to a specialist, it would need to be towed. As its DSG, I guess that's a full lift  :sad1:

Zayed, thanks for your very kind offer mate, but the car won't move unfortunately.

Thanks Nasir, I think I've read about them before too. Def an option if the mechatronics have had it. Would really like to try and get it scanned if possible. I'm hoping my guardian angel will see to it that it's just the gear selector module, which looking on the net is relatively common too.

Oh blimey really?
Might look to see if VGS in Keston do gearboxes.

In Crystal Palace south London mate.
Noticed that someone with a black ED30 has moved in round the corner. If I swap number plates, do you think they will notice?  :signLOL:
