2 way? 3 way?
« on: February 09, 2016, 11:43:47 am »
 :rolleye:
So, I have 6 speakers in my GTI mk5, two front tweeters, a mid, & the big boy, all stock al in front.
Sooo, if I replace the big 16.5cm one, do I go 2 or 3 way? If I go 3 way do I then disconnect the OE tweeter?
Can I leave the tweeter& get a 2 way mid/bass? (16.5cm)
I have searched before I get the usual flame, can't find this exact info!
Cheers!

I'd think you could do either....but, what are you replacing them with? Have you already added an amp?

There's a lot to be said for keeping the standard speakers for the time being and adding an amp as the first upgrade. It will give you much better bang for your buck than replacing speakers alone.

Whereas most OEM speakers are complete cack; the ones in the mk4 and mk5 golf are actually relatively decent (made by phillips I believe). I remember you'd have to spend £150 upwards to do better than the MK4 Golf standard speakers. The problem is that they don't get a clean signal from the standard HU's. Its the ampification that's a far bigger problem.

You will need 3 way to replace all like for like.
2 way systems are large speaker (16.5cm in this case) and tweeter.
You can see what speaker sizes are available in your component kits.

So as there 3 way I'll disconnect the tweeter?
Really don't want to get involved in amps etc, just planning on a pioneer CarPlay head unit & new speakers.

I would go for 3 way components rather than coaxial speakers, so you have 3 individual speakers: tweeter, midrange and woofer in each door.  The ones you have linked wouldn't be much of an upgrade, you need to be looking at £150+ to make it worth the hassle of removing the stock speakers.  Or you could keep the current speakers in and add a cheap amp, around £100 bracket would get you something ok off ebay.  If budget is big enough then change the speakers and add an amp but that is quite a lot of work.

You'll get much better sound just from the headunit change (as the internal amp is better than the OEM unit). Not worth "upgrading" the speakers for a cheap set of components IMO. The stock speakers are more capable than you're giving them credit for, and they won't be rattling around in the doors. It's the OEM amplification that's the issue.

I've so far only changed the headunit in the Golf (for a pioneer SPH-DA120) and it sounds much better already. I'll possibly add an amp and sub in future, but still won't be changing the speakers.

The amp is far more important

Whatever you decide to do, I'd recommend keeping tweeters in the top of the doors (or replacing them) as you won't get the same high notes if the tweeter is in a 3-way at the bottom of the door.

Just a question though, do the golf with the 10 speaker pack come with a factory amp?

I read there was one under the passenger seat but haven't looked myself?

That's the radio I'm after, just returning my faulty eBay Chinese special, buy cheap buy twice but I had to have a gamble, seems others have had great luck with there units.
I had a play with the Sph da120 in halfords & really liked it. I just really liked that OE look from the android unit.

I have the 10 speakers but no underseat amp - that was an optional extra I believe.
