Vw Dealer

Hi

I was going to get some new mudflaps installed by a VW dealer, as its £150 all in, so not a bad deal, but after waking up in a sweat , and thinking about the email they sent saying they will do a free health check, and the fact they won’t let you watch the install, I have since cancelled this request.
I’m all for paying mechanics, but do remember them taking my friend to the cleaners many years ago, the look on that poor mans face has never left me.
So, am I being paranoid, overly cautious, or do they still tend to be over zealous in their checks?

Also, why won’t they let you watch them service the car?

150 seems steep for some mudflaps and install? 

Surely it would be cheaper to buy them with the screws and everything you need and would be a 10 min job?

And they arnt servicing your car just a 'health check' which you can turn down the things they say need doing anyway. Never watched vw do any work on cars as I think it's health and safety and all that.

I wouldn't bother with mud flaps, just sprays mud up the side of wings. Save your money, but vcds...it's the answer to everything

The parts  from TPS (£165) and labour (£60) from an independent came to £225, thats why I thought it was a good deal from the VW dealer. Yes, your right I could have said no, but I would still like to watch them, which leads me to ask another question has anyone ever placed hidden camera's in the bonnet etc, to video the service?

re splashing the sides, I have a small dilemma now, I thought they would protect the underneath, hence I already ordered them, from ebay £103

Go to a recommended vw dealer or a specialist. Then you won't need a hidden camera.  Its only mudflaps, i doubt they would do anything to mess up your car or engine.

Also mudflaps are designed to stop sprays or debris from hitting other drivers, you will get most of rain sprays going up the arch and on side of wings

VW garages wont let you in the workshop.... health and safety init.

Unless you are friendly with an independant garage they will not let you in because of health and safety reasons.

I wonder how you are in a real panic situation. A free health check? oh no :(

The VW workshops around me have glass partitions to look from the waiting area into the workshop.

Let them do a health check, it may flag up something. It is just a sales lead for them, don't think that just main dealers do it.
You aren't committed to any remedial work they 'find', just decline it.

My car was twice in Audi last summer - first time they had 3-4mm tread on the tyres, next time they had 4-5mm, have never known tread to grow.

If you have a remap ask them not to do any software updates without approval.

But make sure you leave a post it note of 'please do not wash' on your dash!

Ya, I'm being somewhat paranoid and a cynic, many years ago they did some work to investigate a fault and then said that he would have to pay for the labour costs which came to an exorbitant amount regardless of the maintanence work. They also then pilled on other faults...so Im just being cautious

Anyway all points noted and thanks..

Will try one out at somepint and see how it goes, meanwhile if anyone knows of any good ones in the West London area, please post.

Not quite west london but VW Alan Day in southgate were good when they serviced my car.

Waste of money. Must be removed every 3/4 months to properly clean behind.  Sills will suffer.  £150 for rust more cleaning and hassle.
 Not to mention they actually attract muck onto your hatch.

Not sure what your concern is ?, a health check is ok, they won't/can't do any work unless you authorise it, and more often than not they give it a free clean. Why would you want to watch them fitting a set of mud flaps ?. I wouldn't think it necessary to watch them do anything on your car ?, have you had a bad experience with this dealer ?, seems overly paranoid  , I would just book it in and not have thought about it. Obviously check the car over when you collect it for damage etc, even record the mileage if you don't want them taking 'extended test drives'. In terms of your friends experience, they can take you to the cleaners based on their findings in a health check. You just don't approve any work until you get a second opinion. Sorted

As above, they can advise on any work which they deem to be 'required', but, it's only on your say so to go ahead. Plus, a lot of dealer's now use an ipad mini or the likes and do a video health check and send it to you

I now know what a vcds is, and I'm purchasing one, this way I can do my own health checks before taking it in to dealer, should I need to...

I had no idea about this tool and that you could do this, I must having been living in the dark ages, its brillant...
