I now know what a vcds is, and I'm purchasing one, this way I can do my own health checks before taking it in to dealer, should I need to...

I had no idea about this tool and that you could do this, I must having been living in the dark ages, its brillant...

A scan isn't always classed as a health check, but it usually points out if something is faulty. A health check usually involves a visual look at all movable parts of the car, like suspension, hubs, brakes, turbo hoses,  coolant etc.

But yeah you can still turn down all the work they offer. Usually they just over inflate whats wrong.

Yes, nothing like a realy check, so noted.

It was when they (any garage's) come out with faults galore, which in the past has made me uneasy, this way I can check for any faults before letting anyone look, so I can see for myself.

Guys, want to see how incompetent some dealers are? Check out this recent post after this poor chap gave in his R8 and asked for a couple of badges to be removed...

How would you deal with this?

I sincerely believe most (not all) the techs in VW/Audi garages are trained monkeys, only half a step up from your average kwik fit employee. I stay well clear of stealers and use one of 3 or 4 trusted independents, where I have got to know the staff over a number of years and I know my car will get looked after.

unbelievable!, poor fella, perhaps we need a site like trusatrader.com (trustacardealer.com), it would give us some level of assurances, and help to avoid the dodgy ones, it would also work in their favour, if they are good.
