I need a new motor
« on: February 13, 2016, 09:39:13 pm »
So its been around 8 years! i love my ED30 and its a real decent performance car!!
However! i want to find a new car... Im looking for something which is more suitable for my years. Of course it has to be a drivers performance car. I cant go back from the performance of a stage2+ ed30!

Thought id throw the idea out on the forum and see people suggestions.. i have a few ideas

BMW 2013 M3.. around £35 but older and no longer produced..
BMW M4, around 45k for a 2014 plate, waiting for the new plate may drop the cost a little and allow me to get a 15plate
Mercedes C63.. 2013 ish i think, 45k but huge engine, cost more on petrol and tax
Audi RS5, 44k? 2013 ish, Not totally sold on the lo0ks, pretty standard from the side and again, more in tax and petrol plus older..
Porche Cayman up to 45k, look great but (if.when i have a family, will be useless!) also maintenance is probably ridiculous.

Right now im leaning towards the M4. first gen so may be a collector later on, extremely fast. Twin turbo, can be modded with a plugin box of around an extra 100hp..

opening up a can of worms, but go for it lads!

F10 M5? There were/are some seriously good lease deals.

Personally love the E92 M3. They'll never make a big N/A engine like that again.

M5 is too large for me, also costs more.
M3 i do like, but the engine is such a size and puts out less than the m4.. plus i like a turbo, easily tunable too

Merc c63 or rs5 for me

RS5s are as much as a much newer m5, as mentioned they also seem to average looking.
Merc i do like a lot! but a 6.3 engine.. bit ridiculous

BMW 335i?

Audi S5?

Both much cheaper than an M3 with plenty of tuning capability to surpass it... Prices in Ireland are €15 - €20K for 2008 models compared to €30k for a similar M3.

The money you would save from going up another model i.e. S5 over RS5 can be used to tune it to the nth degree!

I'm in the same situation as you Steve, will have has the Eddie 6 years this September.

Looking at changing it after 7 years.

The problem with the V8 M3 is that you can get the V8 M5 for the same money - no comparison in terms of comfort, torque.

So at the moment I would hope that an decent M5 can be had for £25k in late 2017/early 2018

If you're spending £40-£45k, don't need a family car yet, why not consider an early V8 R8? They seem to have been very stable at that price for at least a couple of years too, so you probably wouldn't lose much on depreciation when you're forced to move to something more sensible. Make the most of it while you can though!

Get it to MRC tuning for a stage 2 map (makes the throttle response absolutely electric).

Bear in mind that the C63, M4 and a lot of M3's are quite small cars when you start to try and lug around family stuff. You mention that may be happening in the future. That being the case, get a Cayman in the meantime. They are real weapons and the flat four engines they are now introducing will keep residuals of the 6 cylinder cars high.

You will hardly lose anything on the Cayman and upkeep is not as high as you think compared to the other cars listed

Not wishing to pre-empt the motoring press' reviews, I think you'll find this will be THE car of the year. Hints are it is a stunner.

Oh, and you can spec DCT.  :happy2:

Nice idea but not really great for day to day with these stats- MPG 19 mpg, Insurance Group 49

Cayman i do like, but for that price you can only get the 2.7L which is pretty slow compared. Better in corners im sure but that doesnt swing it. Also not having any room get anyone in the back isnt really ideal

see what the new RS4 is going to be like as its a 3.0 v6 isnt it - get it on a PCP and then just figure out how to finance the balloon payment
