I know I was so shocked! I can't think how it could get like that!
Water must be getting in there to have done something like that.  :sad1:
When repairing, heat the cables up with the iron and then touch the solder to it so it melts into the wiring. Sounds easier than done but doable as mentioned. I've done it on a vw alhambra and make sure you stick the heat shrink in between before you join the wires together.

I did notice earlier actually that the rubber flexible bit that lips onto the frame of the car was a bit lose so I might have to look into sealing this somehow when I have soldered the cables.

That's probably it Craigh, not had a look at the fitting of the rubber but if you can get a small or thin cable tie around for a cheap fix then just do that if you're not got to replace the thing as I have seen the door removed and it's a pain of a job to align back up. Thought I'd just be an unplug and stretch the rubber over but don't think it is.
