Speed related noise?
« on: January 06, 2010, 06:02:48 pm »
My GTI has developed a speed related (not revs related) droning noise. sounds a bit like somethings rubbing or cross ply tires on a landy! had a look around in the dark with a torch and cant see anything out of place. warranty expires VERY soon!
Any ideas folks?

Same happened on mine at almost 3 years old. Turned out to be a rear wheel bearing. Took a while to diagnose as they blamed the tyres at first. Fair play they put some ed30 wheels on and it still did it.

I had offside rear bearing go at 40k on my previous MkV. Symptoms sound exactly as yours. Cost me 240 quid to have fixed at VW. Was about 3 weeks out of warranty.

Deffo sounds like a wheel bearing. The wifes Jetta has had two done under warranty in the last two months.

As for if it's ''safe'' or not. If the noise gets louder then I'd suggest you park it up. We drove with the wifes one for a good few weeks before the second one was done and it didn't get any worse.  :happy2:

If its not too noisy then it should be ok - however if it does let go the wheel will fall off. My brother-in-laws old fiesta did exactly that!!
