Pulling hub off driveshaft
« on: February 18, 2016, 02:28:25 pm »
So, as title, how do people normally pull the hubs off the driveshafts, keeping the driveshaft in the gearbox? Embarrisngly, ive actually done it before when replacing my cv joint but have forgotten how… :ashamed: I seem to recall undoing the three bolts on the bottom of the wishbone knuckle, and then its blank.

Remove main hub bolt then the 3 bolts to the ball joint and pull the wishbone down.

@dazza wont the wishbone just pull down and pull nothing with it because its now not attached to the hub?

Yes it will pull down when 3 bolts and hub bolts are removed.

Sorry, I meant how will doing that pull the hub off the driveshaft as the wishbone isn't attached to the hub once the bolts are removed?

EDIT: do you mean once the wishbone is out the way, ill be able to grab the disc and pull the hub towards me, and off the driveshaft?

I was under the impression it had to be tapped out

I was just about to say I've done that job before, it's in my thread - http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,89715.msg907250.html#msg907250

Then I realised no I haven't.. Maybe I did on the old polo  :rolleye:

Anyway, the thread has photos to refresh your thought Pesky!

Well you kind of have done the job in that thread, as part of changing of the CV boot (you gave me a lot of help when I did mine, probably wouldn't have managed it without your help, thanks again!).

So you took the hub nut, the three bottom bolts out and then put a socket through the hub, resting on the drive shaft, and tapped it? Does the driveshaft have room to move backwards out of the hub then? I would have thought the hub would have to come forward opposed to the drive shaft going backwards.

I might film stuff I do now so I can rewatch a year later when I forget  :signLOL:

I removed the nuts and left the bolts in there hence having to pull the wishbone down.  :signLOL:

Then pull the hub off the drive shaft.

So, both of you separated the wishbone from the hub (definitely remember doing this)

Then, luke knocked the driveshaft out the back of the hub with a socket

Dazza pulled the hub away from the driveshaft and off the driveshaft.

At least if I try one and it doesn't work I can try the other :)

On my other car it would not pull off so i put the hub nut in a little and tapped it with the hammer. A socket would be better.
