Induction 'fluttery' noise
« on: February 20, 2016, 07:05:46 pm »
Had my revo induction kit fitted today and pleased with it...  Can hear the darth vader type inhale noise, but noticed the fluttery noise doesn't seem anywhere near as apparent as it does on some videos...  Does it depend on the intake or whether the car is mapped etc?

I have one on a stage 2 KO4 car and all the right noises are present and correct.
You haven't said if yours is mapped or KO3 or 4 but you have  kind of indicated that it may not be mapped either way, so I'll assume not...

I couldn't say how an unmapped vehicle would take an intake, I feel it could be questionable. There'll be those that say it's absolutely fine but personally I might not have bothered. Stage 1 doesn't need an intake either, in fact stage 1 cars drive really nicely on a standard box in everyday circumstances.

If you're unlucky at stage 1, particularly with an intake, your HPFP may struggle to maintain a good air fuel ratio (AFR) - this is REALLY important. Bit of a lottery as some pumps make it OK and others don't. Wear and manufacturing tolerances come into play.

Have you noticed a drop in low end torque since having it fitted? It's possible, even likely, that you may have noticed that it drove better on the standard intake. If you haven't noticed yet I think you might once you're over the honeymoon period.

People also knock out the pre-cat for their own reasons. This also has the effect of relieving the turbo of a little back pressure which would have had the effect of assisting the turbo in spooling nice and early. So this and an intake for example may sound great but the real world driving experience can be negatively affected. There'll be a placebo as the noise will entertain some when given the beans.

If I were asked I would say leave an intake alone until stage 2 and buy a stage 1 map instead.

Just for info KO3's map nicely to stage 2 as they don't suffer compressor surge like the KO4's. It's not all about big numbers  :happy2:

Thanks for the very detailed post mate...  It's much appreciated

Well it sounds like I have done the opposite to what you suggest haha

I have a Ko4 Edition 30... It's getting an RTech map in the spring to Stage 1. So currently it is stock.

It has had the pre cat removed and has a Milltek cat back.  I kinda wanted to get things done to it before going for the map so that when they do the map it's all how it should be for the mods that are on it. Rather than add stuff after the map if that makes any sense.

I haven't noticed a performance decrease yet but I guess it's only been a day.  I know certain induction kits are louder than others. I am very happy with the Revo noise but upon watching videos of various ones including Revo you can hear that flutter noise and I wasn't sure if that's something that would become more audible once the cars been mapped...  Not that I mind it without the noise, it was just an observation really.

You'll hear more boost (and associated noises) from a remapped car, yes.

Try giving the throttle a little blip when you're on the clutch between gear changes.

Fitting a blow off valve results in the full on chatter/spool noise on a remapped car. I went from this to quieter whooshing once removed.

Very true regarding the HPFP!  Mine ran out of puff like clockwork at 300lbft. Lambda pegged out at +25% (the max!) and low rail pressure fault codes.  The standard clutch slipped at that exact same torque too!  That wasn't a cheap day.  £1000 in clutch and £600 in fuel pump (Loba).   With these engines you've got to pay to play unfortunately.

This is what bothers me about off-the-shelf tunes.  Do companies like Revo dyno the car after it's mapped and check the relevant measuring blocks in VCDS before sending you off down the road?

Agreed on all the intake and exhaust stuff although personally speaking, I wouldn't bother with the intake until stage 3 :)   But that's just me as I hate unnecessary noise and would only Darth Vader my car if unavoidable!

Any decent revo dealer will take the car out and log it once mapped to make sure its all within spec, and not doing anything silly.
