Boost leak other than DV?
« on: February 29, 2016, 12:49:57 pm »
I replaced the old split Rev C that was on the car when I bought it last June with a new Rev G and my boost came back big time.

In the last couple of weeks I've noticed a lack of power and you can hear the boost depressurization when coming off the throttle - I heard the same with my old DV that was torn and then nothing audible with the new unit fitted. I thought I needed to check the DV bolts as I had used some old threadlock but I checked 2 out of 3 of them (complete ball ache to get to on a K03 car) and they feel very tight and the DV doesn't move at all.

Presumably on a standard car with standard map it shouldn't have ripped a new Rev G DV in 6 months?

If so - where else is a boost leak likely on the Mk5?

Thanks

The boost pipe connections are a common leak point too. Easily spotted by sweaty oil patches around the pipe connections and drips of oil on the undertray from the driver's side discharge pipe.

I'm in the process of removing them all of those pesky clip connections.  2 have gone already with a MK6 R intercooler and the remaining 2 or 3 are being deleted with a Spulen turbo discharge pipe kit.  All that along with a GFB DV+ will give you a nice, fit and forget leak free boost circuit.

If not that, it's time to start doing some fault finding and logging with VCDS.

I split a Rev G inside 3 months so it's entirely feasible for it to rip. Those stupid clip connectors always leak. Can't wait to get rid of my last 2 in the next couple of weeks

Nope - All I can assume is that the RevG has split afetr about 3 months on my standard car. I can't confirm because the most awkward bolt to get to has rounded off. Thanks for using Chocolate metal VW. No idea how I will get that off. No space to get a removal tool on it or a welder to weld on a stick of metal......

Oh that is annoying! So you're just stuck with an underboosting car for now? Someone might be able to advise a plan, althought im afraid its not me. The only thing I could say is that it would a day or two labour to raise the engine up and remove it. Bit costly for a DV however

Yep - I'm currently driving a car without forced induction!

My main issue is that I have very little time to spend on the car as it is - especially to do a job I have done already to fit yet another defective part from VW (presuming it is that which is torn again).
What little time I have due to the kids and wife etc is spent on the MR2 Turbo which is another nightmare but only because of my wheel, suspension and geometry setup I chose!

Maybe you'll have to snap the dv off and buy a new one and remove the bolt that's rounded off.

I don't know that sounds like its asking for trouble. I'd say your best bet is to take it Alex at AKS and get his opinion

I struggled for access when I replaced my split dv diaphragm with th DV + it was a nightmare seized bolts but did come off with a 3/8 drive rachet 1/4 step down and bit holder for the torx bit. little awkward but never again and I will never use threadlock as that's just plain  :stupid: especially on those bolts.

Thing is, if I snap the dv and it's ok I've wasted money, if I snap it and it is the cause vw won't give me a replacement because it looks like I've broken it.
