I would be taking it elsewhere. It does sound like the turbo, not much else it can be..... But bearing failure is the end result, not the cause of the failure. They can't say what it is without investigating which will mean money for time spent. Even then if they are just 'fitters' they may not have the slightest clue where to start

£1400 is an obscene amount of money considering an upgraded hybrid item from BBT is only £800ish to buy outright.

its an Audi/VW specialist and i know they charge a lot, so i've told them to take it out and give me a shout so i can decide weather to buy new/second hand or replace the cartridge with Turbo Technics in Wincanton.

I'm the unluckiest person in the world with cars, Paid through the teeth for this low mileage Gti and this it what i get... always the same lol

If you bought the car from a VW dealer, did it not come with a years' warranty?

My last two used VW purchases have, and was extremely glad as my R32 ended up needing a new Haldex  :scared:

Quick update! And it's a happy one too!

I asked the garage to whip Turbo off and then we'll go from there, I just got off the phone with them and it turns out the cat had broken up and blocked the exchaust which in turn stopped the boost and made the turbo whine like it did

So I just need to bang a sports exchaust on a bit quicker than intended, probably just delete the pre cat and chuck a sports cat on it actually, my loud chavvy days are over! Lol

I'm sure there's a moral to this story somewhere....

Well that's some good news!  A cat is cheaper than a turbo!

Has your car been over-fuelling do you know?  That's usually what kills a cat off prematurely.

Very good news, but also need to understand how it happened.

Don't see or hear of the cat breaking up and blocking the exhaust on these very often.

Yeah i would imagine it's pretty rare! after they told me that, i had the pre cat knocked out and the cam follower changed while it was in there (i already had the cam follower) and its cost me £140 all in  :P

such a relief! ill now be going on holiday next week as originally planned :driver:

Happened on mine, 05 plate, got a rattle at first start up. Good excuse for a downpipe

Great news mate, relieved for ya!
Plus you probably get the benefit of a few more horses as a result now

It worries me though that some garages are evidently too quick to jump the gun and want charge you £££ for a new turbo and fitting on a bit of an educated guess.

Well avoided, and excellent result.

Although you've got me a bit worried now, mine can sound slightly rattly on cold start up but I just assumed it was a heat sheald.

They were useless mate! after i found out what the issue was i said lets get it sorted and while your under the car, can you bash the pre-cat out for me...? he said yes and ill see you tomorrow........... SHWEET

So Obviously didn't do it. he said that would have took more time and money... WOW, no sh*t!

Anyway, i definitely dodged a bullet there, for the time being i got them to cut the guts out of the cat and weld it up. ill get round to buying a full system sometime soon.

The rattle definitely sounded like a heat shield to start with, but i only heard it when coasting in gear and coming down the revs for bout 70/80 miles until it blocked. the funny thing was they said the bit of cat they took out was WAY to big to block the pipe up. they were baffled by that but when they tested it it worked, so threw the car back at me!

i also made use of the guys there and had the follower changed while it was with them (i have the hardline version and dont own any spline bits)

Its definitely worth taking a look at the cat if that rattle, I hope thats all it is too as its a lot cheaper than a turbo!!

The only thing i can really see is that its been dropped or been hit by something underneath,  i asked to see the bit they took out but had already binned it before i got there.
