Custom downpipe
« on: March 01, 2016, 11:49:25 am »
So I have decided to get a 3" custom downpipe.fitted today. The specialist said it's a pig of a job to get the original downpipe off. Just curious as he recons 6-7 hours to complete. Does this sound right

So the labour quoted includes the manufacturing of the downpipe?

With regards to removing the old, there's isn't any difference between GTI and their verious engines, all the same. Sometimes the bolts can be tricky to reach but with the right tools and penetration fluid and patients it's not that difficult. Recon I could do mine on the drive in under 1hr.

You do know you can buy a eBay downpipe for like 120quid? That will mate to your stock cat back exhaust. So 120quid plus labour fitting for a hour....

^^^^ As above, i have that downpipe from ebay and the quality is great and fit perfect. you dont need a custom pipe at all, take him the down pipe and tell him to fit it.

If he thinks its a struggle, go to somewhere who removes them on a weekly basis as they will do it in an hour and know how to remove properly.

If you go for a cheap ebay one then please have it further tig welded for extra support ad they are known for cracking. Not all but you get the jist. Also buy a powerflex dog bone insert or similar for extra jerking support to protect the DP from flexing unless you already have one fitted to the bone that is
