The price of some parts....

So get some parts from TPS  for a few small jobs to do.

The ok prices, for me anyhow - Fuel filter £15, Cam follower £32, turbo/downpipe gasket £7.

The HOW MUCH prices.....Fuel pump seal £12....really.... is it made from some ultra rare special compound rubber or is it a few pence worth of rubber?  :surprised:

Turbo nuts £23 for four....???

The electronic components are more of a rip off. "Sir would like a basic circuit board wrapped in plastic? £90".

Probably doesn't cost them more than a few pounds to make it, and given the amount of time they've been making the '1K' components, the cost of production must have dropped significantly.

I really think this should be regulated in the same way as other retail products. Their margins must be huge on parts.

Oh and they want £15 for an extended service book. "But sir, it has the VW stamp" - "Sir thinks it's just paper with ink".

That's how dealers make their money - on the parts!   By the time they've paid for building rent, utility bills, wages, taxes, marketing etc etc they don't make much.

It's the smaller stuff they put a big mark up on.  The stuff you NEED, like filters and bolts etc.   Big bits like steering racks etc have a smaller mark up because that stuff is just expensive, full stop!

A main dealership (not a specialist dealer) business plan is harder to understand than a mobile phone shop business plan. The sales department will generally always run at a loss (believe it or not it's true) the service department makes the money to keep the doors open and the parts department is the profit. Iv been in the trade for 20 years and it's always been that way.
It's gotta change soon though as the likes of Carwow are forcing dealers to eat into their service department profit.

Hence why they're not keen on customers turning up with their own oil for their service  :smiley:   

1 litre of Shell Helix Ultra is, what, £15 retail to the customer?  Supplied to the dealer it probably works out at a quid a litre in those huge drums they buy in!

It doesn't bother me tbh.  I know it's over-priced on the surface of things but it keeps people employed.  Every damn thing costs a fortune these days, so par for the course a car will cost you to run.

What does tickle me though is the people who complain about dealer pricing love to see dealer stamps in the service book when they buy a car.  The irony.

When I used to work for BMW the service department would refuse to do the service if parts were supplied by a customer - they'd say it couldn't be garenteed that they were genuine BMW parts or BMW spec oil - a bit cheeky but kinda makes sense. It is strange how people prefer a main dealer service stamp where everything is done as quickly as possible over a specialist history. Obviously not all main dealers are the same but I'd value a service history by, for example AKS, Awesome etc etc (many more excellent independents available) to a main dealer for the performance end of the range. Run of the mill stuff main dealer fine but the "special" stuff specialist FTW
