Mayo on underside of Oil cap

Just checked the oil today and topped up with about 100ml of oil and noticed a small white mayo like deposit on the underside of the cap. I know this can be the sign of the cylinder head failing and water and oil mixing, although the car doesn't show any other symptons, gets to temp normally, no overheating, no loss of performance, no water loss from the expansion bottle.

What are the other causes, anyone else had any experinces?

Don,t worry about it, i get it all the time in this cold weather. Its just condensation when the warm oil is cooling down. Take it out and give it a good thrashing and it will go away.

Yeh seen this a few times, usually when cold or when cars are used for short journeys

Can be a sign of a Head Gasket failing or can also be caused by doing short journeys, if its short journeys you do I dont think there is anything to worry about...

I am not a expert so you may want to let someone more qualified to confirm

I've got the exact same symptoms as you Rob, with residue water in the oil and the un-affected performance + drive.

I wouldn't worry about it, I'm going to monitor mine but not fussed that it's a big problem.
Other than a blowing exhaust mine is in very good health  :smiley: I expect yours is probably even healthier being an Ed30 and newer so not a concern really, the cold weather encourages that as Blade rightly says  :smiley:

Reassuring comments guys. Over the past month its not been anywhere near a motorway where it usually spend most of its time, its all been 2 or 3 mile journeys.

I did have it in the back of my mind the revo i had put on a month ago might have had something to do with it but the above comments make more sense.

i got this on my ed 30 and now on my S3 only a small amount but my car stands unused quite a bit as soon as it goes out for a run its fine , nothing to be concerned about  :happy2:
does the catch can stop this ? ive got one sitting on my garage shelf  :happy2:

Same here  :smiley:

The catch can removes the moisture from the oil so no mayo under the oil cap.

I've just put about 250ml of Castrol Edge in mine as the oil gauge was halfway between min and max. The sludge i had under my oil cap was yellowy-green not white. I've not been on a long run for a while due to winter and each work day do a 10 mile drive to/from work, albeit about 6 miles on a motorway.

The car has done nearly 14k miles (May 08) and was last serviced May 09.

I assume this too is nothing to worry about.

I hear from a few other forums that it is just condensation caused by weather and short trips, if you have this on your dipstick it may be more serious!

Me three either.

I also had a look around the engine in the light with a powerful torch and there's no oil splashes or residue underneath, or in the engine bay. Even more reassurance it's not a broken component I suppose.

it is that colour with edge oil esp if the oil is fresh  :happy2:
