Have the same problem myself... when driving the temperature only goes to ~70c but when I stop at lights etc.. it goes back upto 90c.

Hopefully getting it replaced later this week  :happy2:

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but is it just the one thermostat to be replaced? I'm having the same issue.

Cheers!

The main one is the most prone to failing. Try that first.

Buy a genuine part  :happy2:

Will definitely replace it with genuine.

The gauge sits at around 75 unless I'm stood still, then it will eventually rise. No fault codes so as with previous people, I assume it's the thermostat.

So is that the part number posted earlier, 06F 121 111 H for an edition 30?

Just thought I'd update to say that it was the thermostat at fault. Cost me £180 all in for the genuine part to be fitted.

I was originally quoted £200 all in but they took less time than expected and knocked some money off which I was really impressed about - could've been too easy to just tell me it was the £200 they quoted! Mine was inclusive of VAT also, with a free bottle of screen wash and a £10 off voucher for next time :)

Mines in today to get fixed with main thermostat. Granted its an A3 2.0T, but the same engine. Seems like its an awkward job.

Temp needle hasnt moved at all for over a month, and fuel economy has suffered. Garage are charging £170 all in with genuine part, so hopefully that fixes the issue.

So we know the temp gauges aren't moving up very fast but how is it effecting your heaters? Mine seems to eventually get to 90c or just under after about 15 minutes+ of dual carriageway driving but the heaters seem to only blow luke warm for a further 15 mins then they eventually start to blow as they used to and melt your face
Is this the same case for everyone else with suspected main thermostat issues?

Also even when mine is indicating nearly 90c on the gauge its actually only reading about 72c when we checked it through obd port using a digital scangauge!

Really hope its just the thermostat causing the issue and nothing more serious like heater matrix etc!

Could temp sensor/switch cause all these issues also?

Sorry to hijack thread but any advice/experiences be much appreciated

My main stat is being changed next week so fingers crossed

Sorry I didn't see this reply....

I can't say that I noticed my heaters to not be working - I only got the car early December so it's been cold the entire time I've owned it and never been cold in the car. Also, my temp gauge never reached 90 on a dual carriageway/motorway, only at stand still or crawling traffic. It sounds to me like you may have a different issue!

Yep, mine was sitting at 75 and the heaters were rubbish, as was the mpg.

Changed it out today and it's a lot easier than people make out tbh.  Total cost was £70 for a new stat and sensor from VW, plus 4 hours of my time

Weirdly, the old stat was fully closed like the new one, but replacing it has done the trick, or maybe it was the sensor, who knows.  Good learning experience either way!

Heaters are now hot and the engine feels better, so well worth doing.

It's a chronic issue that these engines have. People should check with VCDS or any other OBDII diagnostic tool what temperatures they run while driving, if they don't have PolarFIS or something like it to check the temps.
