Yesterday, whilst I was out for a day trip, my TPMS light illuminated on the dash along with a 'bong' noise.  It would appear that my off side rear brakes - discs and calipers where rather warm, much warmer than the other side.  So decided to return home much earlier then had planned.   When I got home, I jacked the rear of the car up and hand spun each of the rear wheels to see what was going on.  The o/s/r wheel spun not as free moving as the n/s/r. It looks like the o/s/r brake pads are slightly binding on the disc.   Also the brake fluid (pagid 5.1) the brake pedal was getting a little spongey as a consequence.

I did notice over the last few months that the o/s/r wheel had more brake dust on it compared to the n/s/r and then the last few weeks I have noticed that when driving out of the garage the rear brake pops free.

 I am going to take it to a specialist for them to repair, just wanting an idea of what it could be?

seized caliper.  i notice this seems to be quite a common thing with these cars

Either your caliper or the pads stuck in the carrier

I have heard about seized caliper stories.  I will have to wait until Tuesday to phone up the specialist and see when they can look at it.

If it is a seized caliper, would it be advisable to replace the other rear caliper (replace things in pairs like suspension, tyres (same axel)

No just replace that caliper,hopefully your rear pads and discs are ok,as the sticking caliper can bind the pads on and make the disc go blue

A neighbours mk5 rear brake was sticking a few months ago and I got away with just removing the pads, cleaning the pad and carrier and it's been fine ever since. Then again my rear calipers handbrake mech is sticking and was advised on MOT. Definitely seems to be a common feature of these cars.

Great timing, my light has come on too and all pressures are fine. What else does TPMS monitor?

I had a F/N/S caliper sticking, just worked it free and replaced the brake fluid (had gone spongey like you said) and it's been fine ever since

Just to update you. It was a seized o/s/r brake caliper and also they found the n/s/f CV boot split, so I had that replaced also.   They garage said did I want a 'copy - non-OEM' caliper or a genuine... I opted for a Genuine...£130 + vat.

You can find TRW calipers on ebay with the VW logo scrapped much cheaper than from VW. The GTI calipers are already painted red.

Yeah very common.  Had to have 2 new calipers last year.  They were beyond repair.   Given how unreliable the OEM ones are, I'd be tempted with pattern ones if it happens again.  Just seems to be a bad design in general.
