Sunroof Any known Problems??
« on: March 29, 2016, 10:21:57 am »
Had my car 3 weeks now (05), and with the hope of some nice sunny days ahead, so I'll be tempted to pop open the sunroof. I've not had a sunroof for quite a few years, deliberately, as I had a real PITA with the sunroof on my then M3 (E46 at the time).

The problem was that it started to rattle, which really annoyed me. It was diagnosed as needing a new cartridge, which was done under warranty, but it wasn't installed correctly and was very slightly higher on one side. I never took it back as I was worried that the rattle would return, if they messed about with it!

So, are there any known issues with the GTI sunroof, please, as it's tempting me to try it out, but I'm nervous about doing so, given my experience with the M3 one, doh! I've been very daring, and moved the blind back, but that's all, ha ha

Cheers

No problems of any concern!

Rare electrical fault typically fixed by turning car on and off.

Keep the seal clean of mold.

The one in my Edition 30 rattles when fully open and when 3/4 open the thrum at certain speeds is awful.

That's just the air pressure causing a vibrational noise! Funnily enough, you can break the air by placing your hand up through it in most instances but you would have an awful tired shoulder after that drive!

Yep, but in the MK4 VW used a wind breaker with notches in it to break up the turbulence, but in the MK5 they went back to a plain one.  I don't remember ever having bad thrum in my MK4s, so it clearly worked!  I wonder if it can be retrofitted to the MK5?

Do recall my mkiiiF not having this issue unless you held down the plastic piece at the front... You could in theory retrofit a wind breaker but realistically it only happens at higher speeds with wind when the sunroof is in fully open mode so the blast of air is more annoying than the noise! Just crack it to tilt function instead

I find, if you open the back windows, only about 1/4". it stops the air buffeting :D

I regularly use my sunroof as i have bad habbits. Not experienced any faults with it. It even closes with my fob if i forget to close it and im indoors.
Would be keen to know more about the deflector on the front though.

Yes, there are faults.

Turbulence, as mentioned above.

And the switch fails, making the sunroof tilt open on its on when it pleases. Often in the rain.

I've taken the switch out for now to get round it. Will need to get a new one before summer!

Turbulence isn't a fault as such, just a sunroof thing.

I've had mine five years and no issues at all. I like it.

I don't think I would have it open on a motorway unless at tilt

I use mine at motorway speeds and it's awful.  As mentioned previously, the MK4's sunroof was loads better in terms of noise levels and turbulence.   The MK5's on the 3/4 open mode is so loud at 70-80ish mph it sounds like a wheel bearing is out.

Are GTI ones black? I've got a couple of grey ones kicking about.
