Paint finish on Mk7 R's
« on: April 04, 2016, 03:46:50 pm »
Have looked at a couple of these now and have to say I'm very disappointed with the paint finish on these cars... The orange peel look of the paint is terrible!

Are they all this bad?

I'm wondering if its something that a detailer could resolve but i'm probably right in thinking that the colour coat is poor and then lacquered over so it is how it is...

Has anyone else noticed this?

It would require wet sanding to sort it

There's been a few complaints on R-OC, although it seems pretty much confined to Lapiz Blue.

Seemed to be worse when the mk7 first came out, there doesn't seem to be as many issues on later cars

Considering the premium image and premium price it's a joke. Meddling corporate beancounters no doubt. My Diamond Black Pearl Mk5 GTI has no orange peel, that tells you a lot. Management at VW must have changed a lot in 12 years.

I looked at a Lapiz Blue R in the dealers showroom early last year,it was shocking. I picked up my 5800 mile PP and it went straight to the detailers. I can blame mine on sponges and  cheap chamoix but that R had zero miles on it.

Have no problems with the paint of my car. I think applying wax and sealant helps a lot.

My local dealer has a lapiz blue R sat in showroom, the paintwork is horrific. The service manager agreed saying it only appears to be this colour.

Not worth wetsanding original paint, did it on my mk5 looks fantastic but factory paints arent meant for wetsanding very thin lacquer

Also for those talking the Lapiz Blue it's very very soft paint and requires a more professional detailing to correct than a mechanic

Mine is a late 2016 and it's a little bit orange peely too, which suggests it
S not just early cars. Still looks amazing in all lights and you have to get right up close and look down the car to see it.

However after it's first weekend with me on wet roads all you can see now is dirt!
